Reviving an old thread but what have you guys with 8ba's into 30/31 frames done with the steering? Sent from my SM-G950F using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Contact Vern Tardel,Santa Rosa,Cali. Or pick up latest issue of Rodders Journal. It “touches” the ins and outs of v8 flats into Model a cars-trucks. I think Tardel has a book pertaining to this very swap of flat v8 into model a cars-trucks. Flatheads Forever! I have over 55 years experience with v8 flatmotors, mostly from the performance aspect. My Henry 32 cabriolet hi-boy(2200 lbs) turns 80 mph in the 1/8 mile with a stock stroke Flatmotor and 2 carbs.
Thanks for the info. I have been offered a 56 f100 box but dont know if it will solve my issues. Sent from my SM-G950F using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The early F1 boxes have the shaft coming out the bottom and the later ones (53 to 56) have it coming out the top. I put a 1950 F1 box in my chassis and I have clearance with a stock flathead exhaust manifold. Not a lot but it doesn't hit. You do however need to put a new flange on the box...
Hi all. This is right where I am going. I have a 28 roadster with a 8Ba going in. I will be using a crab dist and 37 48 new style w/p. I realize there are 2 places to plug on the block. Will be using a 59 a intake and heads. Would like to squeeze this in without modifying the fire wall. I have the chassis ready for mounts ,but don't have a F1 cross member set up or the ft m/ms welded in. I have the Tardel books but need a good dimension from the center of hole of the rad mt to the center of the m/m .
march of 1983 Street Rodder magazine had an installation of the box and adjusting the late '40s brakes. worth buying one... . also the cam gears are different,
Red's Headers makes a specific header for F-1 steering boxes in a Model A with a flathead. They are tight but fit. Tardell has a booklet that shows exactly how to modify the F-1 box. I have this set up in my AV8 And it works fine. Sent from my SM-J727V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
48fordnut I took a grinder to those first, then bead blasted them, then heated them up to 550 degrees in the BBQ, and then sprayed them with grey VHT paint. We'll see how long they stay that way.
Sealed bearing style 3 blade fan. Close to rad but never a problem. Dead center of core. Sent from my SM-J327W using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I know this is an older thread and it goes installing an 8ba into a 30/31 Model A. I am looking to do this also and like the idea of a fan on the generator. Anyone have a source for that? Also the steering box. I see in post which states that the box should come from a 48-52 F1. I also read that in Vern Tardels book. Does this include the F2 and F3?. or are they different? Thanks
F4 and F6 boxes use larger dia spline shaft coming out of the box and longer pitman arm so, please keep in mind the F1 box pitman will not work, all the rest is pretty spot on in regards to the F1.... Few more turns lock to lock I think but shortening the pitman with the drill and ream the 7 degree taper in and install the replacement bolt on steering ball, it does tons of greatness to the drivability. Mine was an 8BA Flatty, Reds Header for F1 box fit flawlessly.... Expensive all in all but worth it. My Last Sedan, F6 box, I didn't get to start with the cleanest area to install... But worked out pretty good.
When I built my A-V8 I started at thr back and mounted the rear end, the '39 style tranny and fabricated rear mount, then the engine ( 8RT) was installed to check the firewall clearance. Too tight. I just fabbed a half assed recess in the firewall. Fabbed and installed front mounts on the frame and good to go. 8RT water pumps, '49 style fan & generator mount. Plenty of clearance to the radiator. You may run into another problem, the front floor toe board. I had to make one to clear the bell housing. I needed to be spaced back about an inch. Still needs some tweaking as it seems to be touching. Good luck trying to get to that right rear head bolt if you ever need to. To be an inventor you need a good imagination and a lot of junk.
