Hot Rods Is it not getting enough air?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Apr 10, 2018.

  1. The banger in the coupe has been running great but I decided to put the breather back on and now it acts as if it's starving for gas or air,it's know of sputtering especially when running from 2nd to 3rd.

What are you guys using? HRP

Court house won't allow me to see your pic. Your theory of which tells me it's fat now with breather on (as in air filter). Then there's lean if breathing thru a pcv. Will re-review later.

Have you run the engine without the air filter??
85% of the filters that fit those carbs block too much air?

Rule of physics: Any air cleaner that looks good on a Stromberg is a piece of crap.

  5. Ran good without a filter,I was worried about getting trash or wasp sucked in.

It is a paper type air cleaner. HRP

    There is your problem.
    Remove the air cleaner element.
Grab a pair of your old nylons you wear in secrecy and cut them up to fit over the mouth of your carburetor.
Return your air cleaner without the element.
Don’t worry, Brenda will buy you another pair

I'm afraid if it does backfire the nylons will melt, but you do have me thinking, maybe some thin mesh wire might do the trick. HRP

Any way to work in a filter with a larger surface area element that doesn't look wrong in there? I hate to see engine run without a proper filter on the no matter what they are in.

You really do need a filter...just not one with a 2" roll of Chinese newspaper for an element. There are size and shape specs in some catalogs, get something like an oval filter that is made for use on an actual automobile, rivet an oval of steel to the sawed off bases of your crap filters, work up a filter with a real name brand automotive element.
Rule: Hot rod carb setups with filter that is anything but a big, ugly Detroit type should be assembled and first tuned withou their filter(s). THEN put on your filter, if car drops dead you need a better filter.

  14. Ditch the paper element.
    If you want K&N, try p/n E-3120.
    3-1/4 H x 3-3/4 W.
    Works for me.

^^^^^ Flow disturbance or restriction? Both will cause issue's.

  18. Something in a foam filter media may work (as in the type used in lawn mowers and small engines). A little online searching should give you some options.

  19. Are you using the nylons with the seam up the back. I like those the best!:)

Are you talking about the breather, as first post says, or the air filter ?

  21. Yep, that's the standard choke element.

As Sandy as the soil is in SC, I wouldn't run it long without a filter. Sand will eat the rings in a short time.

  25. Honest Charlie sells an air cleaner that sits there in the mouth of a 94 or a 97. Don't know if it will fit your carb but it's better than a paper one ... s-l400.jpg

That is what I have been using and they are used with open scoop and tubes. They are better than nothing and don't seem to strangle the performance. I had the dome type bug screens which look awesome but are just screens. Only problem with these are the foam insert, that numerous times I have lost into the wind or had them pop out a bit and allow air intake to be unbalanced and unfiltered. I did cut some 1/2" square wire mesh and installed it on the non mesh side and now the foam stays in. You can also wash the foam and let it dry. I always installed mesh down to carb as the other way foam could end up in the carb prior to installing the other mesh.

What Tom also said was something to think about is they just sit in there...one sputter and the filter with its holder could be rolling down the road and that always sucks to. My engine seldom sputters since I installed a choke so chasing filters isn't really an issue any more.

I am a bit surprised that these filters were not designed a little better.

    These look great.
I’ve searched and searched on Hotrod Charlie’s site. But can’t find them.

  30. Sorry about that,Air filter/element,using the term breather is a Southern colloquialism and probably is confusing internationally. HRP
