History The Downing "JET CAR" Atlanta, Georgia (Does it still exist?)

One of my co-workers recently brought me these images of a custom car that his dad and uncle built in the mid-50s from a wrecked 1952 Oldsmobile (with 53 Oldsmobile quarter panels) and an extensive amount of other work. The car was painted "Astec red", and at the time, it got a fair amount of press (see images below).

Tom and Jim Downing owned a large used car lot in the Atlanta area-- here is a shot of the car in front of their store:

Anyone one remember this one? Does it still exist? I figured if anyone might know, it would be the guys here!

Jet Car appears to be missing key component: jet engine.

 

that's because it had a "Rocket" engine!
