Hot Rods 1934 Ford sedan into a coupe

Here is my go at it.
I decided I wanted to build a 34 3 window. After searching around I could not see paying the going rate for a body that needed the lower half replaced. A new body sounds great but at this time l have only seen one avalible and the cost kinda takes the fun out of it for me. I have been thinking about this option since the thread were the cheater club guy did the 5w from a 4dr.
So after stareing at pictures, related threads, and receiving a cardboard pattern I decided to go for it. Here is what I started with. WAY cheaper than any 3 window I have looked at and I got a frame, axle, wishbone, etc.

 

After scribling and marking all over it I cut it. To be honest I did think about just building a sedan. However the subrails were bad so I was going to have to cut it up to fix that. I decided to stay on track.

I attach the cowl back on and line the door posts up so the door gaps are good. I braced the post until i can get the doors bolted shut.
That is another thing I like about using a sedan is it will have steel door posts. I have had some 32 3windows and hate wood door posts.
I had to cut about 9" of excess off the front of the quarter. All of the tailpan metal and subrails came from Tom Bay in Ark City, Kansas. Tom is a great guy and makes very nice parts.

I had to move the cab opening back 3" as the roadster has a longer tulip panel than a 3 window.

 

At this point I cut the top of the door post and rear portion of the door off. I set the roof on it to see just how bad it fits. This is going to be the fun part.

 

With some measurements from a helpful internet friend I was able to get the correct dimensions for the roof opening.

 

I whipped up a set of door post/ headers out of some 16ga. You can see my cardboard pattern that made all of this possible.

 

All I can say is ....WOW. I have to watch this.

 

I was lucky enough to score a set of top hinges from a 33 that have a portiom of the door. I made new inner door tops and part of the outer. I used the window detail from the sedan to supply the lines. Still needs some work and I will add the part that makes it a 34.

 

Got to have a roll down rear window.

Wow, fantastic! And stock height too! Every Coupe conversion I've seen is chopped..
Your work will be in the roof, leaning the rear window forward and getting rid of the Sedan rear roof "bustle" in making it all Coupe like. Also, 3/w Coupe door frames are slightly rounded at the top, not as flat as all the other body style doors.
You've done a great job. I'll have fun following along! I've been collecting 34 scraps for years with a goal to do a puzzle Coupe.
