Projects Pounding out a T roadster

And this is where it sits now. Done for the year. Time to take my wife out for supper since we didn’t go out yesterday for her birthday.

 

How are you bead rolling the panels after they are on the car? Great Work very impressive!

 

It was the turtle deck. My son helped, I man handled. Had to add the bottom piece in the rear anyhow so rolled it before welding.

And I decided to fall down the stairs. Trip to the ER with a broken toe, 9 stitches and IV antibiotics. Progress may be slowed for awhile. I won’t blow that picture up.

It gets me a day off work tomorrow but will probably hurt too much to go to the shop. That means I will likely sit at the keyboard and spend money.

Due to my broken foot, no progress in the shop. However, spending time at the desk spending money and ordering stuff. Paint for the outside, Vinyl for the inside, and Excelsior Stahl Sports for the roadside. Foot hurts too bad after work to work in the shop. Wallet hurts too bad sitting at the desk. Now to decide if the wheels should be black to match the chassis, or red to match the body. Or do I go red on the outside and black on the brake side? I have 40 ford wheels and center caps with ribbed trim rings

 

Your color combinations look good. I think the wheels will look good body color with ribbed trim rings , but I think I would paint the backside red just for the contrast.

I was contemplating going black on the back of the wheels since the brakes on the 8" are 10" vs the 12" Lincolns up front. It would make the difference less noticeable. Right now I don't know which hurts more, my foot, or not being able to go to the shop.

 

New science experiment to clean up these hood sides. Citric acid.

It’s working. Should be good by tomorrow. I have to go back to the specialist for my foot on Wednesday. Hopefully I can be back on this thing full speed again.

 

Citric acid looks like it worked pretty well. Was thinking about using evaporust on some chassis parts. Might try that instead.

Somebody asked about heavier rust on Facebook. It takes a little wire brushing but still works. I am about 10 miles east of Iowa City Roadsir

 

I'm gonna have to try citric acid. Looks to work pretty quick and do a good job. I've got plenty of stuff to use it on, too.

 

I have used citric acid for years.It works fine with the sheetmetal parts,but it destroys cast or forged pieces.I have used 5% mixture,let the piece sunk there 24 hrs,rinse it with water+brushing it with steel brush.After that an another 24 hrs again and some brushing and rinsing.If the piece is done,after the rinsing i have dried it with a heat gun.Without drying it will start to get some rust again.Usually that 48 hrs works,but it doesnt hurt anybody to let it be in there longer.If you can warm the citric acid somehow,it will be more effective when the acid is warmer.

Indeed it may be weak but it is an acid. I wouldn't use it on anything that I feared hydrogen embrittlement. Better safe than sorry.

 

Pulled the hood sides out and wire wheeled them with a drill. Ready to cut down hopefully tomorrow night. Doctor appointment for my foot tomorrow so fingers crossed that all is well with it and I can get back in high gear. Here is a running board that was left outside for years with only primer on it. Guess which end was in the barrel.

Well, the orthopedist cleared me to go ahead and do whatever I can tolerate. Spent 3 hours in the shop working on the hood sides. Unfortunately, my phone died, so no tutorial on wire edging them not using the bead roller. I will use the bead roller to finish them though after making a flat lower die. I also ran to town to buy a bunch of stuff before Chassis Engineering closes up shop for good, which sounds like end of this week, or early next week. I will likely be listing a bunch of stuff in the classifieds at a later date. I will try to get back to the pictures tomorrow.

 

When you say 7% I assume that's by volume?

 

I mixed mine 20 pounds of acid to 50 gallons of water. I don't remember what that ended up as percentage wise. I can try to find the chart again.

 

Yes. I just used a 2x6 frame & pond liner to do doors and fenders.

 

Bottoms redone. Now to figure the tops out.
