Beaches are not "Good (traditional) drag strips either. It's just an excuse to get out and play.

I always find these comments funny because all of the guys that I've encountered in the 3 Trog events I've done have been talented hot rodders. Maybe some of the spectators are hipsters and posers but it's that way everywhere. Build a car in less then a year for a 3 day event and then you can be the judge.

Definitely a lot of talented people. More power to them. If some want to put on some knickers and grow a handlebar mustache, more power to them as well. "Real hot rodders" come in ALL shapes and forms, so I'm not saying they aren't the real deal. But can you really blame me for being put off by costumes?

By "costumes" you mean dressing of the era? I've seen comments about the "silly little helmets"and "Jumpsuits", uh, that's what they wore. I believe the TROG event is meant to be a time machine, and when I was there a few years ago, it was, it was amazing. And not one Orca Betty in sight, just transported back in time.
Hyfire, don't be afraid of fun, life is too short man.

Well, it would've been nice if we had a just a little bit of a warning.......;).
I have to be at the Outrider Picnic so that weekend is a dedicated weekend as I've been a member over 30 years......
But for anyone who hasn't had the opportunity to attend, go for it!!!!!!! It's a great place to have it, but I feel the beach holds just a little more ambiance as your driving on the edge..........

    Have fun guys.

  11. I think this could be a lotta fun and with the USFRA event going at the same time? Bonus! I've run at both SCTA and USFRA events. Both are super, IMHO. I think anytime any group of cars/guys can race on the salt it's a good thing.
And an 1/8th mile is plenty long for these TROG cars to run and still be safe.
Too bad it conflicts with the hill climb but maybe if the event is a success, the two events will be scheduled on different dates next year.
BTW, if the salt is hard that day, I doubt these light little cars will damage it. I've driven on both salt and beach sand and I believe the salt [if it's in good shape] gives better traction.

  12. I saw that yesterday on Facebook. I'm not missing this one!

Its too bad this event happens at the same time as the Hill Climb in Colorado. Unfortunately it will hurt attendance for both events. Someday I would like to attend a TROG event. This year I am already attending the hill climb. maybe next time.

I have been to all four of the hill climbs and "raced" a roadster at three. I raced at TROG West at Pismo. This is so disappointing that TROG choose the same date as the hill climb. There are only a few opportunities for enthusiasts of traditional cars to gather and actually use their machines. In the future some coordination and thought should go into scheduling. As for me, I will wave to the TROG participants as I blow through Wendover on my way from California to Colorado.

I'm going to the Hill Climb...

That being said, why all the venom aimed towards the TROG guys? Have those slinging it ever been? It's literally one of the best car events I have ever been too. I thought it was gonna be sort of lame (what with all the costumes and what not), but it ended up being beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. And I bet if the same guys put the same amount of passion in this bonneville deal, it will be just as beautiful.

But even if you don't find it to be beautiful, is that reason enough to bag on the guys doing it? Reason enough to assume they are jumping the shark and going for the money? I don't really know the TROG guys at all, so maybe they are shit bags or something... But from the outside looking in, they sure do a good job of what they do. Let them do it... and do your own thing if you don't enjoy it.

Point being fellas... we are all car guys... no reason to get all up in arms when folks do things a different way. After going to TROG, I don't really understand all the drama surrounding it. I know people that build cars just for that event. And I know people that do nothing but bag the event. It's weird to me... I mean, I don't really see what all the drama is about.

bflat_cam_current.jpg Yes. And you always hear and see guys saying "I always wanted to go to Bonneville" This is a great opportunity to put up or shut up. If you have a TROG car and want to, take it out and run it. If your car couldn't run the TROG rules, there is the 130 mph mile long runs. Most cars will meet those safety rules. This is a good thing. Go do it. This is the salt at noon local time today. Looks good, huh?

I thought this was a car site. You know, about cars, trucks, and how they were built back in the day.

Many of you who know me can attest that I am a consummate weirdo. Judging by many of the posts on this board, if you guys did not know who I was, you would run me out on a rail from any event that you were attending as not belonging. I cannot count how many people that have clicked like on my work, yet, based on the comments, you'd probably kick me out of your event.

This is my 12,765th post here. Not everyone likes me, but the mods haven't seen fit to ban me (yet). I like to think think that I am making a positive contribution, or at least, not taking away.

This pass-time is not big enough that we can afford to start picking and choosing who supports it, especially on what they look like, what they choose to wear, or how they decorate themselves.

Prep your car. Get it to the salt. Show us what you've got.

I will buy you a beer at the casino, and I won't judge you (unless you drink lite beer).

Sometimes I wonder about the reading comprehension skills on this board!

  20. I agree, but with anyone who is successful there will always be the ones who doubt, hate or are jealous. Take a look at anyone one who is successful or an event that is successful and you will always hear naysayers. I have a very good friend who was on the TROG hate bandwagon for years, and participated this past weekend and his exact words were "I have to fall on my own sword, I had an absolute blast"

This stuff is fun! Its all about getting your old car and having fun! Mel brought us a great event where you get to have FUN! At the sake of hundreds of hours of hard work from the crew that puts this on! So, if you see a large group of like minded people with their old cars out having fun, and all you have to say is negative stuff about it...maybe you are in the wrong hobby? Fuck it man just have fun!

And I back my statement up about this event clashing with hillclimb... it was not a date pulled out of thin air. Get over it. Go to one event or the other. Or stay home and hate.

I get the jealousy/success thing... Hell, last I looked there was a Facebook group dedicated to hating me and ran by folks that have never even met me... I guess I just don't get the motive of folks that go out of their way to express it.

I'm getting old. I don't feel like I understand folks that well anymore. Seems like these days narcissism and shit talking and just pure self gets in the way of folks merely being happy and enjoying whatever it is they enjoy.

Awe well... Good thing I'm a hermit!

    Old cars before people. :)

Iv attended most of the trog events, iv built a new car every year. Every year I tell myself this is it...I'm done, it's too much....every year I'm glad I went. If you like parking lot shows than go to parking lot shows, I however love beating the shit out of my junk, trog has made it possible for the average joe to actually race a car on the beach in 2017!!! With all the "green" politics going on in the world I simply can't fathom how they're getting away with it.

That said, it's a once in a life time opertuinity...try it, you won't be disappointed.

Mel and the boys bust thair asses to put this show on,,,who gives a fuck if they make money doing it!

  24. I think it was more a jab at all the people that keep whining about why they picked the date when you had already explained it. At least that's how I interpreted it.

Agreed... that about sums it up.

if folks cut back on the booze, smoking and buying parts to hang on the garage wall, they could build some "contenders".

The percentage of "car" people who are into traditional hot rods is very small compared to street rodders and muscle car folks. That is what makes it unfortunate that two events coincide at the same time. Unfortunately it will split the interest between the two events. I would love to attend the TROG event but am committed to the hill climb. Hope they can continue to have a TROG in Utah and I can attend or even participate next year. I guess I will have to hide my alternator and buy some moustache wax for next summer.;)

  28. Hell, its sounds like a good time to me. You get to drive your old car on the salt and race some other sicko besides, plus you get to see real USFRA salt flat racing. Why not celebrate our enthusiasm for this addiction in a historic and traditional place like the Bonneville Salt Flats?

Damn, I just wish I had enough hair left to be weird again...........enjoy it while it lasts!

I saw this event posted on facebook yesterday. I'm hoping I'll be able to go. It'll be different from Pismo, that's for sure. Hey, maybe I can enter my pickup in the 130 event, that'd be super cool! So, what is the hot ticket for hotel accommodations, and when is the latest you need to make a reservation?

Haha! as a fellow follically challenged, I agree. There was a time many years ago when I proudly wore my hair down past my shoulders. I always say, if you got it, flaunt it. ;)
