History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

  1. Odd use of phrasing, but Yes, it's a fire burnout.Dump some gas on the track, burn through it.Was popular untill outlawed.

  2. I see that another vendor is now selling the merchandise, same exact stuff, even same website graphics.
    I guess Standard 1320 is a goner.

  3. This was the Hurtig Bros. '57 Chevy. I don't know where this was shot or what class it was running here, but it spent some time racing in one of the IHRA Formula classes. It was a bit of an odd duck among the other Dragway Automotive team cars as they were mostly big wedge or Hemi powered '64 Plymouths, a Dodge Demon and a Hemi Volare. Dave Kaylor and Smokey Clayton also ran cars under Dragway's black, yellow and blue paint scheme.

Dragway Automotive was Loren Zeedyk's shop near Mark Center, Ohio I believe. Loren had a big farmhouse out in the country with a couple of large outbuildings. One was a production machine shop and I believe he employed a few of the area racers. Another large barn was chocked full of Mopar racing parts and cars and was his race shop.

Dragway later evolved into Zeeker Chassis and moved south to the Atlanta area, IIRC. I did a little bit of photography work for Loren over the years. Didn't know him all that well but found him to be a very bright and interesting character. There was seldom a dull moment when you were around him.

Thanks for filling us in I saw the 2F on the side window and figured maybe it was an AHRA class.

Near lane car looks to be the Potter and Winters Vandal that later came to Australia to be raced by Ash Marshall.
The car is currently in Don Garlits' museum.

Actually IMPact was a sponsor. The car itself is Al Bergler's More Aggravation III. It ran AA/C and won both class and the Best Appearing Car award at the 1967 Winternationals

Maybe, but Gene Conway and Don Kirby (Beach City Corvette) both had topless 'vettes as well and if I remember correctly Conway's was the "not red" one.

    Hey Dave,
If we did not have that %$#%^ explosion and fire, we would have our 40 Willys looking like this one from Jr. Thompson. (Hilborn Injectors/Halibrand Mags/M&H, bright yellow, etc.) That would be the good thing. The bad thing would have been is that Jr. Thompson dropped down to our C/Gas class with his supercharged SBC Willys. But, by then we would have raced him regardless of what the situation was...Maybe we had more horsepower if we had all of our upgraded stuff that was supposed to be added before the Nationals that year.

Both of these shots are a little too recent for this thread. The first is of Shirley Muldowney's crash at Sanair in 1984. The injector was the giveaway (along with the Centerline front wheels) and in the second shot the five point cage and the late model Impact helmet tend to stand out.

Is this the crash that led her to become a patient of Doc Trammel?

This car is unique because it represents pinnacle of factory involvement in drag racing of that era. It was one of 50 factory purpose built drag cars delivered from factory as seen, except it gray primer from factory and even arrived at dealership on carrier with other new Plymouths.

It was a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda code B029. Came ready to race with 426 Hemi short ram two 4’s with performance package, Fiberglass front end in black primer, interior gutted with only two lightweight bucket seats up front and no rear seat. Thin lightweight windows and no window regulators, door windows were held up by strap snapped near bottom of door on inside and lowered by unsnapping strap lowering window as strap was allowed to slide down inside of door with glass. No exhaust system other than headers and some modified suspension parts. It was ready to back off carrier from factory, pull to starting line and go Super Stock racing. But it did include a window sticker with disclaimer that it could not be titled and bold wording “Not Intended For Street Use”. Those were crazy days.

There does not seem to be a definitive number as to how many how many BO29 Barracudas (and BO23 Darts) were actually built for Chrysler by Hurst Performance but evidently there were at least 50 of each constructed to make them legal for NHRA Super Stock competition. As well as the other modifications noted by old flopper, the cars also came with a Dana 60 rear end that came out of the "B" body cars and thus the rear wheels as supplied were an oddball offset with the rims moved back on the centers to get the tires under the fenders. The Barracudas had the factory rear wheel openings but the Darts required a "radius" job to get the rear end/tire package to fit.

I'm not sure where recent batches of photos came from but the guy mentioned George Klass so I'm going to give him a shout out anyway. George's site is FULL of great photos.

They used the A-100 Dodge seats in those cars, I duplicated the formed aluminum channel, mounting frames, from photos, for a friend that's building a Hemi-Dart. IMG_6151.JPG

Panic wins a 16-car fuel altered meet...Howard Haight driving, the other guy holding the trophy is Don Wilson. Don and I started Panic with a Les Hawkins chassis, I ran out of money, got married, and Don then partnered with Gary Hazen, with the hat next to Haight. Don, who was a polio survivor, passed away a few years ago...was a long-time Blair's employee, where I knew him.

Brown & Koulan blown Olds fueler, not sure where, maybe San Luis Obispo? The A Sedan behind is the Roach and Torgeson AA/GS from the Santa Barbara area, which ran a blown Olds in a 4-door sedan. It was amazing to watch.
