Any open cockpit car is a blast to drive. I,m sure a cycle would be the same.

Hedrich and McClure, they built this fuel modified roadster to compete with the Speed Sport roadster, but it was too heavy (steel body, for example) to be competitive. But it was sure fun to watch it run.

H & H Garage. This was the first blown dragster I ever saw run. 'The Beach' at night. Seemed like it was only 10-15 feet away. Spectator side looking for a place to sit. About '59. Thanks ARDUN.

    Hello,
There have been other posts on the H&H Garage MEL dragster. Here is a series of film clips I took back in 1959-60, on the H&H Garage Special at Lions. They were one of our favorites as Tets Ishimaru was the driver and did all of his own mechanics. He always put on a show. It sure seemed like he was one of the only guys driving to wear a black leather motorcycle jacket when racing.

Plus, we always wondered if he would be fully protected in a roll over because his head was so close to the top of the roll bar. Early times, early design... But, it was an impressive MEL dragster from the West Coast.

Thanks to Dave: 296ardun for the newspaper clip of Tets Ishimaru driving a twin engine drag boat also, back in this time period during the mid to late 60's.
Talk about being versatile, those hydro hull drag boats were not the easiest thing to handle on the water going that fast, even on smooth water.

Interesting photo Tommy. Although the crew guys' clothing and the background (armco, snow fence etc) screams USA, the car has that funky British look to it. Look at the straight axle and the big wheel hubs on the spokers and the huge ground clearance. Also the Castrol signage which was not that common here in the front motor era and finally the rear wheels which look very much like the British Wolfrace units with the square corner slots. Maybe Canada, because those guys are a little weird as well. :)

    From the foreground:
#349 Billy (aka Little Red) Campbell driven Golddigger of Jack Hart
Rowe and Jones car out of Des Moines IA was driven at this time by Dave Anderson (most likely following his stint in the Kalvestran, Fitzgerald and Bechetti car out of Minneapolis) Dave left this team to drive the Pollution Packer rocket car in which he suffered a fatal crash.
#202 is Charlie Moulder out of Decatur, GA. I can't read the name on the body but it is most likely Dinkens and Moulder and the car was called Insomnia. Charlie later ran a back motor car called Hop 'N' Gator and finally drove Clayton Harris' Southern Flyer in 1973.
#513 The Gopher State Timing Association AA/GD twin driven at the time by Ron Braun

RIVERSIDE RACEWAY 1959 VALLEY HOME SERVICES VS H&H GARAGE SPECIAL ELIMINATIONS
    Hello,

As fast as the updated version of the H&H Garage Special was against the big Hemi powered FEDs, something happened to the MEL dragster against the Valley Home Services 671 SBC FED at Riverside Raceway in 1959. They had both made great single runs in the morning, and it was later on in the eliminations that I took these films.

    Jnaki

We were disappointed that they were eliminated in the final rounds. We always rooted for the racers from Lions, being nearby Long Beach neighborhood, locals.

H&H at Riverside Raceway vs Valley Home Services FED 1959…uh oh

Dean, NEVER....I remember it swapping lanes at San Gabriel and at Fontana-- usually he would just shut it off as it got squirrelly--- but I also don't remember the Speed Sport roadster ever getting sideways-- seems that Red and Joe and Don knew something that Holly didn't---

The parent company (Azko Nobel B.V.) is actually Dutch and they do business worldwide so I am still leaning toward the UK. Plus I was heavily involved in the Aussie drag race scene from the mid 60's up until I moved to the US in 1988 and that car is a new one for me.

    "Arnie Frank's Lil Stang"

Actually it is "L.I. Stang" because Arnie hailed from Long Island, New York. It was powered by an injected 426 Chrysler and popped up hard enough that it usually got all four wheels off the ground as it rode the casters under the rear bumper.
