So why the slicks? if it was powered by thrust only.

  2. Reminded me of that turbine that was designed to replace the center section of the rear-end. My memory isn't what it used to be but, I recall it was marketed (maybe) by a company called Turbonique in Florida (?) and their ads always pictured it under a mid-sixties Chevelle. Does that ring a bell with anyone or have I completely lost it? I'll search the old magazines for one of their ads. Seems they were short-lived........................Don.

VERY COOL, I agree about having to have big balls. 10,000 psi compressed gas, express ride to meet your maker if you got in wreck. Awesome

I always thought those were dual fuel tanks and that the driver was crazy because if the thing ever blew up he' get fried.

    LothianDon1940,

I seem to recall seeing one of those Turbonique rear axle setups under a 63 1/2 Galaxie. It looked like one of the factory light weight cars, all black and wicked looking, but had that weird ass rear end in it! Don't recall the performance numbers tho.

The Turbonic chevelle was part of the Joey Chitwood Thrill Show. Still powered with I think a 396 engine with the turbo 3rd member. Saw it in the '60's at Kil Kare in Xenia, Oh but I don't remember the times. Kinda remember high in front and a lot a smoke out the back.

Look at the burnout picture. Looks like the wheels were driven to me.

  10. ..............................That's the one, guys! Thanks for jogging my memories. Wonder what happened to the car and for that matter, what ever happened to the company (Turbonique)?

I seen the Aireasearch car at Detroit Dragway back in the 60s. Very strange. It was wheel driven.

  16. The photos in the OPs post are of two different cars - the Speed Sport car (from the Oct 62 Hot Rod article) and Dale Grantham's car (with the side tanks) from a 64(?) article.
