a little work on fixing a chassis a customer bought and brought to me to use instead of me building one. so now it gets to be rebuilt. it was out of square, twisted, had some poor welding done, and the front x member had no caster in it.

fixing the rear boxing plates and bobbing the rear of the chassis

havent been able to post lately, been out of town working on a Ridler contender for a week, then to WI to help finish up a sema project. so now that i am back in the shop before i leave for sema i can get some shaping work done.

this 33 ford 5 window came in from a local body shop that needed some new metal put in the car. the wheel wells and quarters have been severly abused over the years with lead, bondo, brass and deep gouged from grinding. so that leads us here

roughing out the new wheel well from one piece

    patterning the quarter

    over all shape roughed in

after some trimming and making body line dies we started hammering them in the quarters. here Ryan is removing the guide fence after bead work

still needs a lot of work and the lower body line, but it is coming along

well i ended up not being happy with the new quarter for a few reasons. the main one was the body line around the wheel well was a little higher than it should have been. so it is junk, and will be re purposed as a wall hanger. you

can see the enthusiasm in my face lol

took some time to make the lower cowl patch while the quarter panel set it so i can learn from my mistakes on the next one

It took me a couple of evenings to go through this thread, I was looking forward to getting back to it tonight. Great work, thanks for taking the time to post all of the pics, descriptions and answering the questions.

You have some bad ass equipment.

Still pretty convinced you never sleep.

  23. Mike , since your teaching us about shrinking with thumb dies , I've been playing with mine and is it normal to get these pull outs on the edge . What's causing it and is there a cure ? Thanks in advance for the lessons . Blue

no, the areas at the end of the shrink you are getting is because you are hitting the edge of the panel to hard and causing the edge to stretch out. in effect you are stretching the end of your shrink fighting yourself. not sure what you are using to shrink ( power hammer or pullmax style machine), but you can either back off pedal and hot at the end to not over hit the edge, or not pull the panel so far out of the thumb on the dies that is hits on the edge in the flat of the dies causing the stretch. in the video if you watch it again i feather the pedal the end of the shrink and only pull panel out enough to close the tuck

Excellent metal work! I wish the quarter panels on my 34 coupe looked as good as your wall hanger. Keep fighting the good fight brother

a little out of the norm use of a power hammer. we made some stamping dies on the cnc machine, and we using the hammer to test stamp the log. the music wont be everyones taste so beware
