The trans will shift early and soft on full throttle upshifts, if you don't connect the cable.

  2. Don't want that to happen, can see that affecting the life of the tranny.

It could. If it has a shift kit, then it will probably be fine. But you'll still have to shift manually to go fast.

With your dual carb setup, it just seems fabbing up a kickdown cable (GM calls it a detent) is going to take some time and experimenting. It may be easier to use something like a Lokar cable to do that, rather than the stock cable assembly. I have never really liked the TH350, especially the "lag" between the 2 to 3 shift; the shifts are't spaced out evenly. A shift kit and playing around with the governor weights helps to tailor that however. Then there's the weak intermediate sprag assembly that's prone to breakage, although you're not going to be "beating" on it like I would. If it were me, I'd be looking into a 200R4 (same length as a short shaft TH350), and being an early six, it probably would not need to be heavily modified ($$$). But, with a 200R4 it's really important to get the throttle valve cable set up right. Transmission crossmember does have to be moved further back if you have one.

  5. Thanks for those thoughts.
You're correct, I won't be beating on it, I'm certain I'll be extending the shift points, once in a while, with a little more foot into the carpet.
Are you recommending the Lokar cable for the 350, because of its adjustability, compared to the GM unit ?
Yes, the car has a Walton crossmember for the current 3 speed stick/overdrive.
The car has a Ford 9", with a 3:50 gear ratio. Not good for the current stick/overdrive.
The 200R4 is an overdrive, correct ?
So, the 3:50 gear will not be good for the 200 R4 either, as I see it.
The complete 3rd member is all new/rebuilt with posi, just 200 miles on it now, don't want to get into more bucks back there.
So, that takes me back to the T.H. 350, without any O.D. lockup.
Any thoughts are always most welcome.
My training from college has me mentally mapping out this complete conversion to the T.H. 350 , thus my many questions.

3.50 gears without overdrive will be just fine. Unless you want it to feel like you're driving a new hondacar.
