Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mad mikey, Dec 9, 2016.

  1. Lets see some of the systems everybody is running, or has run. Post what you like. Your results ,good or bad. Induction ,mild to wild, any type or for any engine, within HAMB guide lines of course. Lets see and discuss.

    1. Y-blocks

Built my hotrod as a teen for highschool in 1959,over the years rebuilt it many times yet never really changed much, between doing other hotrods for others an myself. This is my homemade 4x2 Y-block set-up, tubing used was a old driveshaft cut up. Biggist thing not seen,is there are deviders inside the standtubes up a little into the log vs most old home designs had open between ports. As did most after market cast alum types. 001 (4).JPG

  14. I've always liked a belt driven, forced induction system! ;)
I've got almost 200,000 miles on this one in a couple of different vehicles.
Gobs of torque and 18-20 mpg with a 750 Edelbrock in this car.

Also, you can see why I run an electric fan. Channeled coupe with a 5" short radiator, low engine for leg room and the 2" blower drive make it necessary.

    Hello,

Our 40 Willys was not a finished race/street car like Dean Lowe’s original Hilborn injected roadster pickup. We were just getting started, but built the car with what we could get our hands on during this time. It was fun putting together all of the parts to make the SBC 671 with 6 Strombergs work well for the strip and for the street. It was temperamental in this early addition of the first 671 systems built for the SBC. We were one of two 671 with 6 Strombergs at Lions during this time period. We did not know until we later saw another similar set up in a Chevy Gasser sedan.

Reath Automotive reworked the 671 and the Drag News Ad should have printed 292 c.i. for the bored out 283. The carbs were hard to adjust, but they worked well. We did have a two hole Hilborn on order for the following week of our accident. The belt drive looked great and the whole system made a sound like no other.

It was a fun time to have such an early version of the 671 for the SBC and make it run well despite trying to get all 6 Strombergs to work.

Mikey, your set up looks fabulous…well done. upload_2016-12-10_7-31-16.png
The misprint should have said stock 40 Willys not 49. There was actually a photograph with the ad in another magazine during this time.

  18. JNAKI, thank you for the complement. That is a great story on your willys. I imagine it was a bit challenging to get the 6 strombergs working good , now that is some impressive tuning. I would love to some day change to a 2 port hilborn set up. Thanks for posting the info on the willys, that is what this thread was created for.:D:cool:

I've posted these before, but they fit here as well. I took these of the Hemi-Kurtis Indy roadster at the '06 Miller Meet.

I really respect what you have done here. It looks fantastic for something a young guy whipped up from a driveshaft! I am so glad that you are still keeping it alive. My Valiant got my 25 year old brain to build it. And now, a tad over 20 years later, I STILL am driving it. I suppose I can post a pick. It is nothing exciting, but I did have to do some fabrication on it....

I like this so much I have spent the last few years rounding up the parts to put together my own.

Thanks for posting all the pics Dean. So we hear how Hilborn injection is not practical for the street, were you able to make it work OK? How was the drivability? Starting?
