"Jazzy Jim" Nelson had the meet's fastest coupe, the Edelbrock & Iskenderian Spl. Mercury-powered Fiat coupe, which ran 132.93 mph in an impressive 10.90 seconds to take the A/Competition Coupe honors. Nelson was one of six finalists when the race moved to Phoenix.

    SUSH MATSUBARA

A definite crowd favorite, Sush Matsubara, near lane, completes his burnout. This car would later be painted with the familiar Mondello & Matsubara livery and eventually set the national record with their 427 Chevy wedge-powered Fiat fuel altered at 7.24, 213 mph at the 1969 U.S. Nationals.

The driver of "Dead Expense," a Fiat coupe, watches for the green light on the "Christmas tree" at Grayson County's Elk Creek Drag Strip. Electronic starting and timing systems replaced the flagmen of the early days. (Roanoke Times photograph)

Crazyman was a real entertainer for sure. Someone from Aus must have a picture of the Chaplin Bros. Goodbye Charlie? I thought I had a couple but can't find them.

This shot was from a magazine shoot I believe in early 2000s. Tomsyk bought Walt's Fuel altered roadster he won the 64 nats in and also picked up Walts Monza Funny which was Wild Willies last ride. This car was an engineering marvel in its day. This was the car that finally put Ratican Jackson and Stearns on the trailor. This was also the first gas car to go 150 MPH .The body for this thing sat up in the rafters in Walts shop for decades until Jerry Dodson, I believe talked him into taking it down and putting the car back together in the form shown here. The picture I posted was taken in about 1999 . The car is a fiberglass flip top funny gas altered with a quick change. Man I miss those days... great stuff!

This one belongs to my friend. He has been driving it since he built it in the '60s. Caddy powered. He's building a Metropolitan with a 390 Ford now.
