I hate to agree with you, "pork", but a buddy recently started a '39 flatmotor by disconnecting the fuel line, pouring a little gas into the Stromberg, and firing that thing. It ran for about 5 seconds before running out of gas, and hadn't been started in 50 years. I don't think my choice of engs. (SBC) would do that. I'll bite the bullet.
I was told that it would be too high-strung, but this is the daily-driven (really) 286 in my '39 Sedan...
Waitin for 42 acorn nuts to arrive. This reminds me what it felt like Christmas day when I was 9 years old.
This is my flatty powered A roadster, been running it for 23 years now and it's still running strong. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
My 46 coupe also runs a hopped up flathead as well. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
....warming up the ole Flathead for another mission to No'whereville... High Noon Speed Shop Baltic, Ohio Check out my new blog: https://ontheroadtonowhereville.wordpress.com/
Flatheads are pretty and traditional, but they're pretty useless. Underpowered, prone to cracked blocks, leaky, and expensive for parts. Certainly not for everyone.
Thats like saying drum brakes useless as to disc, polyester tires useless as to radials, beam axles useless as to independent suspension, leaf springs useless as to coil overs, analog gauges as to digital, bulbs as to LED, 283 as to LS4, any pre 1960 vehicle as to any post 2000. Hence the category "Traditional Hot Rods". Flatheads are about as traditional as it gets in the hot rod community. These are Hot Rods not Street Rods. There are other forums for them.
Hey Chaz, You are right, they are not for everyone. What Ron above said is the absolute truth to us. Part of the charm of any flathead is running it as close to the edge as you can without breaking anything! It is trying to live in another era, another time, arguably, a better time where your cares are miles away. When I am in mine it is always 1952, and I'm always 18. What us flathead and banger junkeys do ain't rational. It's living in a time machine. And some of us... the hard core ones, realize that it's harder to go back than it is to go foreward. That's why we do what we do! Just my $.02
Totally disagree with you and I am not even sure why your looking at this forum if they are not for you... Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
509 Chaz'es heart makes him look. But flattys might not be for everyone, the rest of us just can't get enough of the feeling of the real hotrod time period so we spend what ever it takes to preserve them. I get goose bumps when I hear an 1800s hit or miss motor. And also when I hear a flathead, blown Chrysler, pan head, knuckle head and the space shuttle. Rockets that go hypersonic are my favorite....
yup Tony...to each his own, no one knows better than you how I feel on this subject. also, Thanks to all our vets and first responders on this day 9/11. The rest of this country depend on your special services, regardless what a small minority says. You are needed and loved by most.
I can't wait to drive this useless flathead powered piece of shit 34. I just wish it wasn't so traditional. Also pay no attention to the useless T in the foreground that gets its balls driven off on a regular basis. Flathead junk. I sure wish scrap wasn't so low right now.
You've been here for 12 years and have nearly 5000 posts, I think you were just pulling our legs, opening up the conversation a little. I'll take the bait; New Dodge Vipers have a v-10 with 645 horse power, but I just flip past those articles in Hot Rod Magazine without reading a word. (Boring). The point is to fix something old and cool, something with a soul. Things with soul aren't perfect.
Damn,I love this thread.Great eye candy. Please keep the updates coming. Good luck.Have fun.Be safe. Leo
You got that right Adam I would hate to pull up on you way out in the middle of nowhere in my junk ass flatty powered 32 roadster and have to drive behind you because there's no passing lane. We would have to stop all the time and check them over make sure we make it to hotrod heaven. We would have no fun be covered in oil and have no water to drink because we would have to keep filling up the radiator because all the cracks in are motors just leak it all out We would both wish we air conditioning and cruze control. Worthless flatheads...
I'm not trying to piss in anyone's cornflakes here. We all like what we like for various reasons, but those ARE problems with flatties. I've had folks here tear me a new one cause I'm a fan of the 144 Ford six. Different strokes I guess...... Just sayin'.......
I love my flathead, but I didn't feel my breakfast was being urinated on by your post. I got what you meant
