Projects An Exercise in Practicality - 1939 Ford Early Custom

  1. Very cool you are taking in so much with your 39! Road trips to drags - way to go! The Slingshot intake looks like it performs well on your mill.

Well, not sure how I missed this thread bu a) love the car b) you daily's engine is more traditionally detailed than 99% of the cars up here and c) your backyard kicks ass.

Also, I really hope your kid's name is really Dude.

    Thanks @Old-Soul

My kid's name isn't really the Dude, but that's what we call him about 90% of the time, and I do like putting time into details, in the house and the cars. My neighbors and peers think I'm crazy, but I'd rather be crazy than dull any day.

    I'm back baby...

After the better part of a year, I'm back from the deserts of Southwest Asia.

Plenty to do, but one of course I dove right in on the '39 today, my first day back. She was pretty much as I left her, but for some corrosion here and there. Reconnected the battery, and the fuel pump and starter worked as advertised. The ignition circuit, not so much. But after running a strip of 600 grit over the points, she cranked, ran, and settled into a good, if not somewhat high, idle. Gonna get her out on the road tomorrow and blow the cobwebs out.

Stay tuned for further updates as I can throw them up here. But if I disappear again, its because kid number two is due shortly (crazy what can happen on a 4-day pass).

Little story about whitewalls in 1953:
Older kid, Louie Fahrberger had a nice black '46 Ford Tudor sedan, his 'family car'. Two kids, yet Louie was in the U.S. Army reserve. Called to a 2 week camp, Louie left the car with his wife, who took it down to be serviced.
The service center did a whole 'major oil service', including a tire rotation, never noting that the whitewalls were fronts, black rears. Car was very low, skirted, and rear tires generally went unnoticed.
    Until Louie got home.
We heard him yelling clear around the corner, actually through Mrs. Pierson's yard, like the crow flew...

That fat ass of mine means more traction.

And as far as the Lyons and skirts go, I'm just playing around for the next few days or weeks. The skirts will be back on before long...

Three days until the '39 Goes back to the drags to prove that is has go along with show.

Painted the wheels gold, which I like so much better, and mounted some sacrificial 650-16s on spare rims...

And then, with just a change of shoes and accessories, there's a huge attitude adjustment. From this...

I'll try to remember to give an update on what the car and I have been up to for the last few months, but for now it's time for Egg Nog...

Well, I guess the this is as good a time as any for a long overdue update on the ol' practical car. The last time I had a real update was just before taking the car back to the drag strip, so we'll pick up there...

Back in August, I took the Tudor down for its second trip to the Billetproof Drags at Riverdale Raceway. The big show down between @Chris @marshall and myself was the main event (in my mind anyway) and while my car didn't disappoint, my impatient clutch foot did. In the first round, against Chris's '34 Roadster, we both redlighted with me leaving two hundredths before the roadster. I was knocked out right off the bat, but was given solace in the fact that my heavyweight sedan proved to be two seconds quicker than either Chris's Roadster or Marshall's '49 Convertible.

After the drags, the car pretty much resumed daily-driver commuter duties, rain, shine, or snow at least three days a week...

...and in the meantime I have been gathering little bits an pieces for the next few steps of the car. Santa dropped off some new seat covers under the Christmas tree...

...and along the way I have collected a strange lump of aluminum...

...while the 4-71 isn't intended to take up permanent residence in the Tudor, this car will end up being a rolling testbed for the blower motor. A complete 1951 8CM engine is providing the base to which I will be adding a mixed-n-matched collection of stock, homemade and original speed parts to make a 'mild' supercharged power plant.

And then, just as things were looking up, or at least interesting, calamity struck in the form of an 18 year old behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi...

    IMG_9153.jpg

The offending car, punched the finder skirt almost directly on the rear-axle centerline. The damage didn't seem so bad, but it will end up costing at least a fender, skirt, some quarter panel ripples, a bent wheel, a bent brake drum and most likely an axle shaft and or housing. I just settled on an amount from the kid's insurance company (which is a captivating story in and of itself) and so now, the car is in the driveway waiting on parts to start rolling in...

    IMG_9230.jpg

...and that, brings us up to date on the practical ol' Tudor. Having the car off the road sucks, but it is allowing me some time to button up some issues here and there. Expect some more regular updates in the near future as I am rushing to get the car in a state to pen some more stories this summer.
