History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Royalshifter, Dec 12, 2007.

  1. OCIR looks a lot like Adams and Enriquez vs. Bill Schultz top gas car. The ford at Long Beach could be Gary Cochran without the roadster body (not many people ran blown, wedge fords.)

Thank you, SIR. I remember the roadster from way back but not the coupe. I've also seen the roadster in the museum.

Thanks! ..I don't remember the Enriquez and Adam car being that long, but it certainly could be...blew up the picture and the gasser says "Shultz" on the panel, so that solves that one...could be Gary Cochran, you're right, not many wedge Fords...I will edit the post, and thanks again!

Found this on the Petersen archives...Colton, 1955...was in motion, maybe carb backfire, loose fuel line, etc...NHRA had a big regional meet at Colton in '55, given the official's shirt, this could be it.

Same source, Lake City FL...looks like "Frank Wortz" on door...back when altereds were still street-driven..

Calvin Rice in the J.E. Riley Special, which became the Hot Rod Magazine Special one time, for standing kilometer speed trials at March AFB near Riverside, CA. Rice, along with the Glass Slipper, broke a bunch of records that had stood since the 1930s...this was 1958

    '58 NHRA Nationals, OK City

Same meet...notice the starter is wearing a "Dust Devils" shirt...starters from around the country were invited to start at the Nationals...I seem to remember that the "Dust Devils" ran the track at Inyokern, CA. Buick-powered dragster looks sort of like Steinegger & Eisenbaugh, but really not sure.

Another from Oklahoma City Nationals...backwards Buick...lots of engineering required to switch from intake to exhaust...frame looks pretty well built too

Lineup for the '67 Nationals at Bristol, TN

Surfers...Tom Jobe over the engine, Mike Skinner over the nitro can...

Bernie Regels, A&B Speed Shop.. from Somerville, MA...I remember that they towed all the way to Bakersfield, blew engine on first run, towed all the way back...ouch. (thanks to hoop for correction on town)

Most of us have seen the photo of Ivo and Grabowski racing, but I have not seen this photo of them lining up...Santa Ana, April 1957, for the Life Magazine photo shoot. Norm built his roadster first, Ivo saw it at a drive inn, had to have one too...Norm caught him in his driveway measuring the length of his frame. I don't know if Norm raced his T after this race, but Ivo did...remarkably winning top eliminator several times, including twice at Colton...not bad for a gas burning street roadster.

Not in much motion, but I bet those who know who's car this is won't complain much.
Been looking for other shots of it with no luck.
