There was one of those turbine things that ran down here in so-cal, had 4 round tanks and just made a hissing sound while smoking the tires

Very strange not hearing the engine like on the normal fueler, I think they were from Az.

Sorry, No ID: Jaytee added this information: Tudor Rose racing at Santa Pod in England built by Dennis Priddle and Rex Sluggett

    Maybe Sioux City, IA?

Again, No ID, until now, when Rooman posted the following information: The late John English, Melbourne, Australia. The motor later went in to a 32 roadster, the car that he is best known for down under. One of the pioneers of drag racing in Oz who passed away in early 2013.

There are lots of pictures of M&S, but I have not seen this one with Gene working on the car. The Al Sharp aluminum heads are clear in this picture...Hawkins & Webster also ran a set on the 15oz. coupe, they really worked well.

Pretty primitive by today's standards, but I would take this over today's bucks-up approach to drag racing...This guy probably had very few bucks in this A coupe, but he was drag racing for the fun and competition...that's what it was supposed to be...

    number7-Rick.jpg
Akins and Dugan....Pat Akins had a shop on North Lake in Pasadena where he built and worked on his dragsters...

Jim Davis car, maybe Jim himself?

The J.E. Riley Construction Special, possibly at Santa Ana or Paradise Mesa. Sometimes drag strips paid you a few bucks to put the name of their track on your car. This shot has Melvin Dodd's flathead in it, an engine that would pull this car (later in yellow paint) to the '55 NHRA top eliminator. Later it got Doug Hartlett's blown Chrysler.

Speed Sport, maybe at the '57 World Series of Drag Racing?

Don't worry about the B/GS class designation--early Aussie classes were a little different before the national sanctioning body was created. Same deal with the #1, at that time you simply picked a number that you liked and put it on the car. I think that I shot this photo at the 68 Nationals at Calder Park, Victoria.

  6. The extra coolant plumbing sure gave these cars a distinctive look. Guessing they added a little extra cooling capacity too? o_O Plus, it looked cooler than a radiator would've...

As per the caption/advertising material above the photo the car on the right is Graham Withers' original Kellison in its early form before a series of crashes over the years. The artwork is based on some "tow strap" photos that were taken at Castlereagh (Sydney) and the other car is Ash Marshall's Vandal.

Note at the right of the car: "Les Shockley - mechanic." Les was from Pasadena, we went to school together, he was a real mechanic, taught me a lot about building cars, engines, later went on to run the "Shockwave" series of jet cars...moved to Kansas years ago....
