Event Coverage My Run to The Race O Gentlemen

I got the acceptance email a few weeks ago, but have been too buried in work & club projects (ie; Concours d'Elegance, etc) to start prepping the rod until today.
I got a list of bits the are to be removed in the name of safety or being period correct for the pre-war vibe of the event.

Here's a pic of how we ran the car at the Hot Rod Hill Climb in June.

The list of items to be removed are:
Windshield.
Headlights.
Trim Rings.
Moon Tank (not period)
White Wall Tyres (not period)

I'm looking forward to this new look for the Singlefinger Special, plus this forces me to fix a few things that I've been ignoring..

Ever since we put the bigger Flattie in the car, it's been running hot & hates to idle for very long. Pulled the Radiator to have it tanked & pressure checked tomorrow.

TROG rules require that you only run water in the cooling system to protect the beach from contamination if your rod boils over. So, I'm going to install a couple of restrictors or Thermostats to slow the flow of coolant at idle, which should help a ton.

 

Still in the 90s here on the jersey shore 3 weeks out.

 

Before I pulled the rad, I took the rod out for a quick run w/out the Windshield. I quickly remembered why we have them, when I got a face full of road dirt & a bit of coolant from the leaky rad.
For years, I've been sitting on a stock seat bottom with a shortened riser. The seat cushion itself is about 8" tall. In order to reduce the wind & dirt in my face, I need to sit at least 4-5" lower.
Started to mockup a new seat bottom last night. In order to keep it comfortable, I plan to cover plywood with 2" foam & a 3" bolster at the leading edge.

The man from the wilds of Oklahoma knows what looks right on a car and he nailed it there. Never figured out why guys build beautiful and clean cars and then stick a "mee Too" zit out on the front. Unless it's a nose high gasser that is, then it's a real race car part if it's hooked up..

If you plan on driving your car a bunch, be sure you use high density seat foam (from upholstery store) if you're only using 2" for the seat bottom...trust me on this one.

I gotta agree with Larry,the moon tank is more of a 60's style thing IMPO and actually distracts from a otherwise bitching car,no offense intended. HRP

 

Since the Elco tank has to go, I can't live with the damaged grille any longer. The tank hid the damage that happened when the rod fell off the jack at last year's Hot Rod Hill Climb. It was pretty depressing looking at that original grill all screwed up.

So, today the Highlander & I beat the crushed original grille shell back into shape, then we straightened the insert too.

Looks pretty good for an afternoon's hammering!

Since I have to run the rid w/o a windshield, I needed to make a new bottom cushion that will let me sit about 5-6" lower.

My buddy John owns A1 Upholstery in St Clare Shores, MI, so we attacked the issue right off.

I had already given him the plywood bottom last weekend to measure & mark the foam. So today, he was trimming vinyl when I got there after work.

2-3 hours of sewing, cutting, glueing & stretching later... we had a seat bottom!

The roadster is looking great.

We should get together on travel plans. Scott from Bay City is running his roadster this year and I'm planning on dragging the Caddyhauler out too. It might be good to hook up and caravan out together???

I think we left Saginaw at 3:00 A.M. Friday morning last year and drove straight through.
Long ass haul... I would love to leave Thursday PM this year even I just sleep for a few hours in the truck.

Started this trip with a quick stop at Ferndale Radiator with Mel fixing a sizeable leak in a front tube.
