You are doing a hell of a job Trev.Clean up others mess like this aint easy.Following with great interest.
Man,that is some extremely nice work,I especially like the reshaped quarter windows. This is going to be a beauty! HRP
Got some thanksgiving holiday time in the garage and got the drivers side sail panels tacked in and ready for to weld and finish. Happy with the overall shape and looks correct.
It's nice to see them chopped that much, without the pie shaped rear quarter windows... Nice work....
I have to agree, getting the shape of the quarter windows just right really makes a big difference in the total look of the car. As much as I like the smooth look without the drip rails, I wonder if it is wise to take them off in BC though. The car will get caught in the rain sometime if it gets driven on a regular basis.
Main reason for removing drip rails were that they were severely damaged in the initial chop and would require me to have fabricated new drip rails or get some from a donor roof. Bit of rain never hurt anyone and this car will mostly see summer driving.
Have to agree with you on that. I have no drip rails. ..... and no side glass. I drive my car alot. I've been caught in the rain a few times. And snow. And hail! it's all good.
Really like the workmanship!! The door posts are straight, not leaned forward as in most chopped Mercs, this makes this chop really distinctive.....
I know it's a lot of extra work but have you considered sculpting in drip rails made from brake line or welding rod? They really don't function but break up that ultra smooth look.
Thanks man. No drip rails on this merc. The owner and I are using the 49 merc that Sam Barris built as inspiration. I love the smooth look on this car.
Whoah........no "formal training" he says...........I'd say you're a perfect teacher then. Some people have flair, and some don't. You are in the "have" category my friend. On a black car too. Wow.
Thanks man Thanks. I use mainly hand tools, simple Lancaster style shrinker/stretcher, Miller Maxstar 200dx with watercooled torch and my custom built english wheel. I built the frame and I am using Hoosier profile anvils and upper adjuster.
Got the drivers side sail panels welded up today. Started to hammer and dolly and then ran outta time for the day. Little bit left to do next time.
Thanks dude! Those pictures are great! Haven't seen many from before Ross got it originally chopped. Thanks for posting them.
Dressed the welds and smoothed out the passenger side today. Met a fellow merc owner today, came over and ended up helping me out smoothing the lower crown panels and working the shrink disc. Learned a few tricks from him and hope to be able to work together again. Great to meet someone passionate about metal work and building old cars! Thanks Ross.
