Hi guys I am wondering about what setup and carbeurator to use on a heavily built 383 stroker. It normally puts out around 550-600 hp with a big cam and racing pistons. i wanna go hotrod and found a 3x2 and 6x2 but I don't know what to do for carbs. thanks Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
If you want performance go with a single large four barrel and a dual plane manifold. Single plane if you want more top end.
I would run a 2x4 if it were mine (not on a tunnel). I guess what you go to for carbs is going to depend on your tuning ability. I guess if it is built to the hilt your average 3x2 is not going to let it breath, but a 6x2 with Rochester 2Gs will work really well. It is going to be a nightmare to get dialed in and you will need to get secondary specific carbs for your 4 outboard carbs but once you get it done it will be sweet.
I'd go with the 2x4 too. 2x3 isn't bad but 6x2 makes it a trailer queen for 99% of the guys around. Damned few people around who can tune that setup for the street to where you will want to make any road trips with it. The gas station operators would love you though.
I am planning on it being my daily driver and the 6x2 won't work for me through resurch but either a single quad or a 2x3 I also want mpg without going efi. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I can't comment about mpg, I have never really checked it, but our non-stock 400 SBC runs pretty good with the 6x2 we have. I did have to spend time getting it dialed in, and it is sensitive to elevation changes, but starts up pretty decent, has no dead spots. I do think she starts to run out of carb on the top, but you can't hold it up there for very long or you are going way to fast on the street.
"550-600 hp with a big cam and racing pistons" carbureted daily driver, and you want MPG? Good luck with that......
My dad got 15-25 mpg with lt1 efi. how many cfm do u guys run on your 6x2 and what carbs? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
So true, the only way to do run that kind of hp and get any mpg is run a gm lsx/lq4 motor and 4l60e trans. That's why I never even looked at my mpg, I don't really want to know, it's for fun.
Well, I am running Stromberg 97s which I am told are around 155 cfm each. So when I am running 6 I am around 930 cfm and on just four, 620 cfm. Currently I am just running the outer four and she seems pretty happy with it, except when I spin it over 4k to near 5k she starts to act like she needs more cfm.
Ya that's what I found also I would like to have all of them running that's the thing. I found a complete setup on craigslist for 1000 and there are ford 94s and 97s is that a good deal? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
How good are cross rams it would be easier for me to do a cross ram and the guy has one of those too but I've heard they are only good over 4k. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Go with the 6x2 you'll need it to get enough cfm especially if you're using 94's or 97's. Why would a 6x2 setup make it a trailer queen? When I set mine up I just looked at like one big carb. The center 2 carbs are the primaries and the outer 4 are the secondaries. Just like a single 4 barrel primary and secondaries. Or you could look at it like 2 3x2 setups side by side. Also why would it use anymore fuel then any other setup if the mixture is right? Sure a single 4 barrel is easier. But 6 carbs is a hot rod! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
So is 1,000 good for a offenhauser vintage intake with all linkages and 94 and 97 carbs? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I drive my coupe every day with a blower and 6x2 and a 5 speed it runs great gets pretty good gas milage starts right away.when I was building my coupe the local (Hot ROD) guys said there was no way I could drive my car every day because it had six carbs, guess what they were wrong. build your car just how you want. it takes time to get the bugs out. Don't give up.
Ya I am only 15 you have to understand and my dad is a car guy and thinks it's a little ridiculous to spend that much but that would complete my hole build. I want vintage old school hotrod feel in my truck and that's what I want. The money aspect kills tho I would need to work it off if I bought it. I also just bought a front suspension for 1600 Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I'd be happy to be 55 again, 6x2 gives the max cool factor, ran mine for over ten years with 94s, once you learn them its a blast.
I would think a $1000 is in the ballpark. I don't follow the prices on 94's and 97's but I believe the cores alone are $100 a piece. Plus a new linkage is a $200. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Ok then all I have to do is get the money together and convince my dad. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
