So I'm to the point on this car that I need to pick a color.Back in the body work stage I was set on flat black now I'm starting to second guess that idea.Im trying to build a traditional custom which I have never done before.I have been looking on line for weeks and just can't decide (probably why I've been driving my 40 pickup in primer for the last 8 yrs....lol ) I do know I want a flat color,I know why go thru all the time and labor and put a flat paint job on it.....because I like the flat colors just don't know which one......any help would be greatly appreciated before I pull my last two hairs out.

Are you sure? If you are, you really should be doing something gloss. Unless what you actually want is the permanently unfinished look.

I think on that body style a satin Navy Blue would look terrific...

X2, "flat paint" and "traditional custom" is a total disconnect. Mutually exclusive. Traditional custom= shiny paint "so deep you can swim in it" shiny. Maybe you mean "hamb neo-traditional custom"??

Glossy deep turquoise with light turquoise and leaf green pinstripes.
    But Glossy.
20 coats of hand rubbed glossy.

If you can't afford it, or don't like to rub, shoot some clear on the primer for now and drive it.

    BTW, the body looks awesome!

The darkest, darkest purple almost black and glossy no metalflake. Good luck it is going to be a nice looking mild custom finished.

  12. Traditional custom or "traditional" custom?.... For a proper traditional custom you can't go wrong with titian red, gloss of course.

sent via classroom note. pass it on

  14. I know you like low sheen but I think that's a passing thing. A lot of guys moving to gloss now.
Either Washington Blue or black, but in gloss.
    Sorry, it's just my opinion.

Thanks for your input and opinions on colors guys, maybe someone should enlighten me on the elements that make up a Traditional Custom.

GLOSS... no flat. titan red, maroon or black.

if you must go flat, at least go semi gloss and a color that's not a typical primer color... satin washington blue, maybe a deep maroon.

I highly recommend high gloss, its timeless. If you want to look at low gloss, in the flat paint thread there's a medium blue pearl low gloss full fender car that's beuatiful. Maroon pearl is a classic custom color, some low gloss test panels might be interesting. I still vote shiny.

  20. iphone pictures 057.JPG I've had my 32 on the road 10 years now and in primer.
I'm tired of it, hate the look.
It's a pain to clean oil and tar off it, it's bleaching out and generally looks like crap paint.
Oh also, my wife is sick of the spotted different shades of primer and wants it painted by year end.
It will definitely be gloss this time.
She wants it white, I want it metallic copper-orange.
The roadster is titled in her name so you see which way this is going to go.

Count me on the go-gloss list. I would vote for black, or a deep eggplant purple that is almost black. . . .

A nice ivory would look good with the whitewalls. I'd recommend that you pick one from a 40s or 50s production vehicle. :)

  23. I'll urge you to consider gloss, too. I think that a two-tone combination of the mid- to late '50s would look good. Seafoam and forest green, or charcoal and salmon would be good pairings.

High gloss only! A maroon or titian red finish as others have said. Satin paint gets stained, dirty, and doesn't clean up well like shiny paint does.

Flat black has run it's course. It was kinda cool, what, maybe ten years ago?
I'm with the super shiney camp, especially on that great custom body style. If ya gotta go flat or satin, I'd suggest a bronze or copper, highlighted with some classy cream pin striping. Don't throw all your hard work in the shitter by putting flat black on that thing. JMO.
