I don't remember Jimmy Packard driving the former Carter car in 1958. I do remember a Dick Leisure driving it at Williams Grove in 1958. In 1958 Jimmy was in Gelhausen's car.

I have a hand tinted picture of Jimmy driving the car from 1957 at Terra Haute. The car was red then, black in 1958 with gold leaf numbers.

Gary was on his father's crew in 1960. He spent Race Day out on the pit wall signaling his dad with the chalkboard until the engine blew.

If you look closely you can see that Bud Tinglestad's name is still painted on the side of the car. And the names of mechanics Barney Wimmer and Bill Spoerle are there as well. Wimmer and Spoerle ended up as the main restorers for the IMS Hall of Fame Museum. Spoerle just passed away within the last year and was still on the job to the end.

When John Pfrommer bought the 21 car from Elmer, the deal was Wimmer stayed on for the Trenton 150, Tinglestad to drive. Johnny White wanted to stay in IMCA until August. So the names are correct as painted. Danny Oakes would replace Wimmer starting with Springfield.

Check out the army surplus fuel cans which everyone seemed to use back then. There used to be piles of them at Army/Navy stores. Sure wish I had kept a couple of the old metal cans.

Also out here in L.A. they had those dark blue ' Tanker Jackets ' for just a few bucks that were great

  25. When my dad was buying war surplus "jerry cans", as they were called, for his midget, in the late 40's, the ones to get were for drinking water. The ones the military used for fuel were just steel inside, and they eventually rusted. The ones the military used for drinking water were stainless lined, and the alcohol the racers used for fuel didn't corrode them.

And "tanker jackets" were huge here in the 60's. We could go to Akron, a big Ca discount store then, and buy a brand new tanker jacket for $5! When I was nearly killed in my El Mirage high flying act, they cut a brand new tanker jacket, and a nearly new pair of Levis off me. Bad day for sure.

Dean one thing I did not understand was the Tanker jacket being blue, if it had anything to do with a real Tank you would think they would be green?

    Any thoughts ?
