Novadude, thanks for the video link,

Back in the 80's When the wifey and I toured the antique shops on the west coast we found a good number of vintage postcards from the days just after the quake and I thought it was odd that someone would market a postcard in the face of such a disaster. But that's how it was in the day I guess.

The CBS linked video really puts things into perspective but a person has to realize that the quake caused municipal planners to rethink how things were designed and constructed.
Building codes changed dramatically in that time period and many other cities would follow San Francisco's rule and implement stricter building codes in their areas.

....I found this vid on youtube, sorta a before and after view based on the same video you posted.

*Note. The footage on the left side is about 10 seconds behind that on the right but both views are
of market street while heading in the same direction.
Although the aftermath footage is not credited, we can only surmise that early newsreel cameraman
Miles Brothers had the for-site to record the same view point a mere 2 days after he shot the lively street scene.

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquake that struck San Francisco, California,
and the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906.

    The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is a moment magnitude of 7.9;
however, other values have been proposed, from 7.7 to as high as 8.25.

The main shock epicenter occurred offshore about 2 miles (3.2 km) from the city, near Mussel Rock.
It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault both northward and southward for a total of 296 miles (476 km).

Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles, and inland as far as central Nevada.
The earthquake and resulting fire are remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the
history of the United States alongside the Galveston Hurricane of 1900.

The death toll from the earthquake and resulting fire, estimated to be above 3,000, is the
greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history.

Images of the devastation left behind were captured by pioneering photographer Frederick Eugene Ives.

Taken from of the city's downtown area atop the roof of the Hotel Majestic

where Ives stayed on an October 1906 visit.

These stereo-graph images are though to be the only actual color images of the 1906 quake.
