History The History Of Los Angeles

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ryan, Feb 15, 2010.

  1. Haven't thought about it in many years but, the Santa Fe Super Chief took me from La Plata Missouri to LA in 1959 so I could attend Art Center College in west LA. What an interesting trip for an 18 year old. These pictures are really special for me, thanks bringing back what I saw at that time.

I guess that the track that I miss the most in the Los Angeles area is Lions Drag Strip. There was just "something" about that place and although you can't define it in a nice tidy paragraph, everyone that I know agrees.
From it's opening in 1955 to it's "Golden Years" of the mid 1960's...

To it's closing in December of 1972, it was a thrilling place for so many reasons...
About a month after it closed, Don Gillespie took this photo...:(

  3. In-N-Out voted best fast food in country this year. Still the best. Also, I wonder why only three locations on the card. original and still open until a couple of years ago was in Baldwin Park. Used to ride my bike, then my rides to feed about three or four times a week.

  4. I knew there was something wrong with you. I was born there in 1957.

Good question, I only remember the one in the photo as "Bobs Beef Burger".
I never remember it being an "In 'n Out".
Here it is the way I remember it...

You must have heard the same thing I did growing up..."Thars somtin not right wit that boy" :D:D

  7. Hmmm, is that the one on Walnut in Pasadena? Not the one in Baldwin Park, no train tracks behind, the 10 fwy is there in 68 (Camaro looks new, so should be around that time) and right behind was Synder Market, the owner of In-N-Out.

This burger stand was right around the corner from you...Its where the railroad trestle crosses Huntington in Arcadia...across the street from "the Derby" steak house....its now that shopping complex on the south side of Huntington..
Doc Kleckner owned this burger stand through the 60's and 70's. His brother Gary lived in Monrovia and drove the street driven Nomad wheelstander, "Chevado".....Doug

    Mazooma,

I always read that Mines was on the corner of Aviation and Lennox. Do you have an areal view of the site today ? I've always wanted to see a yesterday/today picture of Mines Field. Jim

Jim, I don't have much more than this. But, that would be close, if not exactly where it was. Of course, the only info that I have is what I posted.
I do remember going with my mom and dad to the Mines Field Airport (now LAX) to pick up my cousins who were arriving on a "Super Constellation"... (!!!)
    Man, I'm getting old...
The print I have says that the street on the far right, going up and down, is Century and the street that would be just below and out of frame at the bottom would be Sepulveda...

Here's some more "then and now" stuff...
If any of you have ever gone to the Pomona Fairgrounds for the L.A. Roadster Show, the car swap meets, or the drags, you will know this bridge that you pass under to get to the parking lot. This is at the north side of the complex, just east of where the sand-trap is at the drag strip.

they used to run sports car races in the parking lot in the late 50's, early 60's...and part of the course was under this bridge...

Below, you can clearly see the road course in this aerial photo. The yellow dot is where the bridge is and the red dot is where the sand-trap for the drag strip is...

the yellow arrow points at the location of the bridge and on the left you can see how they incorportated the drag strip into the road course

    and there you have it....

this photo was taken from that bridge.........

you are right...it was a rotating beacon
President Calvin Coolidge was the first person to turn the beacon on when he used a telegraph key to switch on the light in 1928.

There were four Ascots, and I'm assuming that you are referring to the one at Vermont and 182nd St.
All I have is my memories of the three dirt tracks, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 mile tracks and the TT course for motorcycles.
We used to go there for "Turkey Night", the Thanksgiving day midget race that drew drivers from all over the Country.
I remember it was rained out in 1975, so a few days later they ran it on asphalt at Speedway 605 just east of the 605 freeway in Irwindale/Baldwin Park. That was the only time they ran that race on asphalt.
I vividly remember because that was the weekend that Graham Hill was killed in a plane crash.
    I'll dig up some photos.

I really am enjoying these old photos. I lived in Arcadia in the early 1940s. I spent much time in the bike shop. Later I almost lived at Carpenter's drive-in during my early hot rodding days. It was fun.
    Great photos. Don

Great Don, I didn't know you were from Arcadia back in the 40's...small world.
My Dad was born there in 1922 and Mom grew up on a chicken ranch on Walnut, south of Longdon.
I miss the Santa Anita Theater next to Carpenter's...best sci-fi movies were in the 50's...
    Love your books...all of them.....Doug
