Got a early 80`s 350 going in my `40 ford pu, using a 621 al bellhousing, the starter will not fit inside the bellhousing. Are there different starters for automatics and manual transmissions ? Using a diagonal bolt starter with 168 flywheel. Where am I going wrong ? Thanks Tony
they use a starter with an iron nose back then...maybe that's what you need? It's been a long time since I put a 621 on a car, so I forget. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...=Search_01920_5153717_3090&pt=01920&ppt=C0330
I only use cast iron Chevy truck & '55-57 car bellhouings. The starter being on the bellhousing simplifies the equation greatly.
Think your right, didn't realize the iron nose was smaller http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/208441/ Bet a mini starter would fit.
For anybody having issues with the old chevy small block starters here's a quick low down using common oreilly type numbers. 03-0371 is mid- late 60s bell housing 168 tooth. 03-0254 is cast nose diagonal 70-72 bbc # 168 tooth, 03-0367 is most common diagonal nose 168 tooth. 03-0300 is 153 tooth diagonal. 03-1064 is pmgr reduction diagonal #168 tooth . 03-0064 is A fix for broken ear on blocks it has straight pattern blocks uses 153 tooth ring gear. By far most awesome I've ever came across for a fix is a 2003 gm truck 8100 big block open nose hitachi style gear reduction unit #17880 is number , these are amazing and almost never require any shimming on even the worst blocks, requires couple or 3 flat washers to make knurl fit properly in older blocks. It fits all 168 tooth v8 Chevys big n small from 55 up with a diagonal pattern . Extremely quiet & powerful . Hope this helps.
