Projects Project 29 Phaeton

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 340HilbornDuster, Jan 29, 2013.

  1. My front seat went back 3" and my back seat lost 10" or so due to the framework and gas tank. My seat backs will be replaced with foam. I am very comfortable up front and just fit still in the back. I'm 6'2".

    Here's my buddy's 31 Phaeton with a Moon Tank.
    KP1.JPG KP2.JPG
I will Probably mount mine right up against the seat pan, and put a 45 deg foot rest / plank over it.

Got some more braces / mounts in today.

That sounds like a good idea, Tommy. I do everything the hard way.

Is the '31 another Hawaii resident?

I hope one of my kids move to Hawaii to so i can go there for 6 weeks to in the middle of the winter.
I have follow this build since start and its looks to be a killer.
Not to many are built with a sb Mopar or a Phaeton body so this one will stand out from the crowd.

    Hey Anders... Man Tackar!

My Mom said the opposite..."you bring'em up and then, they move to Hawaii...and you hardly see'em anymore"
...(but they're having a good time!)

Pretty sure it'll be the only 29 Phaeton with a Mopar 340 w. a Hilborn.

    Update:
Gotta little work done...(parents here for another two weeks...which is great!...cars isn't everything!)

Fixed a leak - drilled from inside through the body....and... (Old Dry slicks just on for size...i'm gonna go with wire wheels - i'll probably go 32 18" in the back and 16, 18 or skinny 19's in the front...?)
    29-1.JPG
Patches for firewall made out of $10/pair swap meet 30-31 cowl light brackets (according to the guy who sold them)...
    29-2.JPG
    29-3.JPG
The other side of the bracket will be used on the inside as floor support.
    29-b.JPG
    Haven't seen any on-line.
If they're rare...then they're even more rare now!
NEXT - Weld / patch holes in the firewall, bolt it in so i can take the tank out and gut it. bend and weld in a cowl support hoop.
    29-4.JPG
The Tie rod will have to go through the bone.& cross steer is not an option anymore.
    Ordered:
    Forged X-Long Suicide Steering Arms
& Forged Spindle Steering Arm from Super Bell (rjays)
    + some windshield hardware.

The Forged Superbell Steering Arms from RJays are REALLY NICE...!
I have to bend them Down (?), Out & Forward (~3/4"- 1") so the Tie Rod can go through the bones.
    SA1.jpg
Rotated the Corvette caliper brackets up and everything lined up better.
They "stick out" a little more but it looks OK..?
    SA2.jpg SA3.jpg
It'll take me allot of measuring and making a mirror bending jig for 'em.

I'm gonna have to go with Cowl steering...starter on drivers side...cross steer doesn't work with the through bones route.
    s29-1.JPG
    Off by 7/8"
    s29-2.JPG
Sorry Mr. Ackerman...If I don't have any steering output you don't matter...
I'll have them magnafluxed before flight.
    s29-3.JPG
Going to order a 1 inch longer Tie Rod that's perfectly straight (Hard to straighten that bugger!) and it'll give me more steering output before it hits the locking clamps. (Limiter stops on steering box)
    s29-4.JPG
Bent steel plates like J's to TIG weld in to re-enforce the openings...make 'em tight.
Tacked the spring shackles so I can take it apart and weld up everything including sleeves for all the holes.

You're getting there, Tommy. It was riding a little low... The steering arms and the tie rod through the bones are all worked out now?

Waiting for the new straight tie rod material to show up..
11/16-18 Taps & tie rod ends came yesrerday. (Tx Speedway 4 using USPS!)
The steering arms travel about 1/4 - 1/2 inch up and down.
Once it's properly centered / adjusted. I have a bunch of TIG welding to do to re reinforce the bones.

    So I cut them out.
