Folks Of Interest POST or HARDTOP

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Feb 17, 2017.

  1. Several of us local hot rodders meet for lunch every Thursday and someone always brings up some subject to debate about, like it or don't like it conversation.

The subject came up about the post cars and hardtops and why we would prefer one over the other.

My personal favorite has to be the '55 Chevy post verses the hardtop,on the other hand a '56 Ford looks better as a hardtop to me. HRP

Post vs Hardtop: depends on the vehicle in question.
I agree with your thought on the 55 Chevy/56Ford

George X2. I've owned quite a few Tri5 and mid year sixties Chevy's all were 2 door post cars. I like the look of the roof line better and the cars are considerably tighter (less rattles, less air and water leaks). The 63 Impala in my avatar is the first non post Chevy I've had. Back in the day hardtops were more desirable. Not sure thats the case anymore.

  5. Hardtop windows leak and rattle. Also hard to adjust so they fit. Even harder to get the flippers to flip.

A lot depends on the car. Take the '50 Olds, I think the hardtop makes a great mild custom and the bubble coupe can have a tough, street fighter look with a simple addition of tires and five spokes. The '57 Fords are a different situation for me, personally I don't care for a Fairlane hardtop, but a 300 post car is perfect. Tri-Chevy's ? Post only and it has to be the cheaper 150 or 210.
I'll stop there, too many others to mention.

  7. I wonder if in some parts of the country guys may find the hardtop more attractive and therefore more desirable. HRP

Post. The windows rattle less and the factory roll cage is a plus.

The post cars are lighter, better for racing. Hardtops look better. Gary

  13. I've had a '55 or 57 Chevy since 1966, never a hardtop. Post for two reasons; stronger and lighter for drag racing and the hardtop was always just that much more dough that I couldn't afford it. Agree on the 55/56 Fords, hardtop.

I'm with HRP, I would always take a tri-Chevy in a post and the 56 Ford in a HT.
On a 55 Ford the HT only looks good with the Crown Vic lower roofline IMO.

What way is the "Wind Blowing" :D
My 56 Chev is a Hardtop and I do like the lower Roof Line as well as the Shorter Roof.
It is just a Cruiser so Performance (1/4 Mile) is not a Priority.
If it was a ...... 1/4 Mile Rocket...... Post Car Absolutely.
Hey..... If any of us are lucky enough to have either Version we are hands down more fortunate than 99.8% of all the other Car Owners out there.
Where I disagree with so many other peoples choices is, I do not like to Drive Convertables. o_O
I know that puts me in a very Small Group, Hey, but it is what it is.....
    Good Thread Topic Mr. HRP

Now I know where Danny gets his material:cool:
When I had my 57 BelAir in high school and many years after this was the only tri-5 Chevy that really got my attention, but for some years now it's the 55 210 sedan.
Not all of them though as the BelAir has too much stainless trim to my liking. The cars' theme also matters too, has to be all hot rod, even primered and unpolished 5 spokes.

My nephew came over and poked one of those "do everything" pocket devices in my face this last week and it had a kit for around 3 grand to make 2dr posts out of 4dr cars; 55 for sure and maybe the others. I've never had a HT with undamaged flippers on the side windows.

Hardtop. Nothing better than cruising the local strip or a 2-lane hwy with all 4 windows down.

  20. I always enjoyed "Hardtoppin it" but a post car is a little lighter. I've had both of every year chevy and Pontiac and loved 'em all. A 55 ford sedan looks better than a hardtop but a 56 ford hardtop always looks better than the post IMHO

I like the lower roofline on the 54 hardtop. In my opinion, it looks more proportionate than with the post.
Besides, hard toppen is pretty sweet!

Sedans are tighter and look tuff, but hardtops are swoopier, especially the Chevys. The "sweetheart dip" on the hardtop is much deeper, more pronounced. The sedans just have a little notch. I think the hardtops are closest to the designers' vision for the car.

Convert, then hardtop, then post.....only started liking posts in the last few years.
Still can't get my heart around a 4 dr , although a 4 dr hardtop is starting to be almost OK....

Having owned both . Including a 4 door hardtop, I prefer a post car. When I used to have a lot of early Chevy 2's . The post version allowed for more head room. Could wear a ball cap in a post car, could not in a hardtop without rubbing the headliner.
55 210 is one of my all time favorites.
