HISTORY BUZZ: This was the original headquarters for the Knox Oil Company. Built in 1923, it was purchased by John Vater in 1929. Carlos Harbour purchased it in 1953 from the Vater Oil Company. It was a handsome stucco building with tile roof and survived until 1975 when this picture was taken by Steve Harbour, son of Carlos. Steve spent many happy days there with his dad Carlos. The station was located at the SE corner of Independence and Elm Enid,Okla. When it was sold and then torn down in 1975, gas was $0.28/gallon.

About a mile west of Tucumcari on Route 66 are the remains of the long abandoned Paradise Motel and Cafe. It was too far away from I-40 and the still thriving parts of 66 on the east end of town, so it closed in the 1990s.
Of the two, the cafe building is (surprisingly) in much better shape, as the motel burned twice in the latter part of the last decade.
The cafe is attached to a gas station, which despite what you see here, was a Texaco while it was operating.

Woods General Store on Hwy. 56 in Beryl Junction Utah.
We stopped there when it was still open in 2011, we were in route to the LA Roadster show in California. The nice lady opened the lunch counter for us and we had some great burgers. Only one pump was operational and it only went to 99.9 cents per gallon so she told us to just pump the gas and let her know how many gallons we took and she would figure it out at the register. Before we left she took pictures of the hot rods in front of the pumps. Stuff you do not experience when you drive the Interstate!

Not my words, copied and pasted

Browns service station on rt16 at Belva,W.V. In continuous operation for over 100 years. Still full service at the pump. And it's just a short distance from the New River Gorge National Park.
Edit-Also owned and operated by the same family the entire time. I was born about 20 miles from here in Clay co.
Also, when I look at both pics,it makes me think of all the different gas pumps that have seen use there over the past century. Wonder if they still have any of them? GasTexas.jpg Gastexas1.jpg

It's for sale in Maywood, Ca just a little ways from one of Ed Roth's old shops. Looks to be a one-time Phillips 66? It can be yours for $1.15 million. Screenshot 2024-03-26 102538.png
