  5. Since closing as a gas station many years ago it has been a truck stop food joint and more lately a failed Diner. JW

    December 1969
Four men robbed Charlie Murray, owner of the Cedar Hill Grocery Store, 16 miles east of Tucumcari. They pulled a razor on Mr. Murray and tied him to a bed in the back of the store. They then took two shotguns, two pistols, silverware, cash from the register and stole Murray's car.
State Police spotted the stolen car near the Caprock, and a high speed chase exceeding 100 miles an hour ensued. The robbers were captured at a road block which had been set up two miles north of Broadview by State Police out of Clovis. The four suspects were taken to the Quay County jail to wait arraignment. 7. Dave. I'm in that area 4 or 5 times a year. Would you happen to know what road/hwy it is on? "east".I'm thinking I40 surface road, which would place it close to Cuervo, or hwy 54.
Opps, my mistake, Quervo is 16 miles East of Santa Rosa, not Tucumcarie, and has lots of old deserted buildings, but not that one.

The “town”of Nothing, on SR. 93 is/was located between Wickenburg and Kingman, AZ. The peak population of Nothing was four. But the proud residents were blessed with a sense of humor. GasNothing.jpg

In Ohio, we have an Old Gas Station that a long-time collector bought for his daughter and turned it into a diner. It's wonderful to see it revived and used once again.

Same!! I love seeing old buildings and wondering about the life that was lived there when it was in it's prime.

We were lucky enough to stop there in 1995 and spend some time with Lucille before she passed away. She was the loveliest and friendly lady.

upload_2024-2-26_2-14-32.png The Arches 1955 Newport Beach So Cal

    Hello,

Recently, my wife and I had business trip in Newport Beach. So, naturally, a coastal road trip was necessary. Upon arriving at the split to go to the Balboa Peninsula on the ocean or inland toward the county fair location and college campuses was the destination. So, over the years, that intersection has gone through many changes. From a stop light in the early days to an overhead bridge with PCH underneath, to a several circular offramps and on ramps to allow the massive flow of traffic to merge and go smoothly into traffic in all directions.

It was a major intersection and for the travelers North, a stop for gas was an easy situation. We stopped there many times as it was one of the few gas stations toward Huntington Beach and home to Long Beach. In our surf travel days, we could afford gas there, but could not afford the dinners there. Our dad took us to a dinner there when we were very young, but that did not count when we were on the road by our teenage selves.

Over the years, at the bottom of this intersection is the very old remnants of the Arches Gas Station and Restaurant.

If one is on the bay waters for any reason, the West end of the bay is just across the street. In the early days, the sight of the blue water as one passed the overhead bridge gave a welcome sight to travelers. Our dad’s favorite place to fish from a small skiff was just along the West end cove under a Lido Island Bridge.

My wife and I docked our sailboat at the West end Lido Isle Marina several times. Despite the daily massive traffic flowing on PCH, the waters of the bay are relatively quiet and serene. But while on the road going South, the bay is still there, but now, buildings and restaurants on the bay side block the view of the massive harbor/bay.

At one time, the Arches looked like this:

The Arches started out as a service station and restaurant. Construction began in 1925, the same year the Coast Highway opened up from Huntington Beach to Newport Beach.

    Note 2:

Many changes have been made over the years and the latest version, not the original name or owner, but local folks still associate the old name “Arches” to the new “A Restaurant.” YRMV
