Thanks for the info and extra pictures.

I know some people that were active in the banger circles in so cal that might have some info on this engine. I'll ask around.

Jim B. might have some info too..

  3. I'm looking for a high compression head for my stock banger. Whats the highest ratio I can go? Who has the best price?

  4. All I've heard since I've been asking the same question....Stock babbits work well with compression up to 6 to 1. After that, you need to start looking at inserts.

As far as new, Snyder's seems to have the best head for the best price. They have a 5.5 to 1 cast iron head (basically a copy of the "police" head) for $295 and they now have their new cast iron 6 to 1 head in stock for $325.

    I'll be going with the Snyder's 5.5!

  5. I was thinking that Snyder's was the cheapest. Is the 5.5 better being cast iron? I'm sure there isn't much difference as far as horsepower gain?

  6. Both are cast iron. I just don't want to push teh envelope too far....and its cheaper. The extra $35 could get me a carb kit or something. :D

More important....... HOW LONG WILL IT LAST??????

  8. Yes, Bluto, that is another reason I've chosen the 5.5 head. I really don't want to have to rebuild one of these! If I tear this one up, I won't be allowed back in the Banger Meet threads ever again! :D

  9. Duh. Sorry I missed the cast iron for both heads.

  10. Set your timing to no more than 24 or 25 degrees max and DON'T lug it

  11. Yup! I agree, that is an amazing engine! I always enjoy seeing the innovations made by the guys back in the "Thirties".

I wouldn't want to put many" revs" on that little engine, with that kind of cam drive. Fred Duesenberg found out what problems bevel gear driven OHC's were. His problem was, apparently, he stuck to his problem race engines:rolleyes:

Ok guys, nothing real exciting but something to keep the thread alive. I recently had my first banger registered in Australia. It's a pretty much stock 30. Next I will replace the selector shafts and the spring and plungers as it slips out of top gear.

  21. I've had my head down, trying to get my race car in shape for the 2014 season, which starts the first weekend in May at Buttonwillow Raceway.. "Test and Tune" at Buttonwillow last month, seemed to indicate a carb problem. I sent my Stromberg 97's to Jere Jobe. Jere changed the jetting and power valves. He found some residue; and advised that I clean the whole fuel delivery system. The plungers on the accelerator pumps were all dried up. So he changed them, too.

I'm expecting a shipment of foam today, to change out that in my fuel cell. I'm changing the filters and blowing the lines. I figure that some of the residue might be lead that precipitated out of the racing gas, when I put some Stabil it the fuel, several years ago (dumb thing to do with leaded fuel). Some of the disintegrated foam may have reached the carbs, as well. It should all come "out in the wash"

Then I've got to go through the whole chassis and suspension, to make sure all the parts will go the same direction at the same time;)

Nice work on the head. What grade of aluminum do you typically use?

  24. This one is std 6061 T6.
I built it for testing a concept in chamber shape.

I am not sure how it will hold up, there is much testing to do before heading to Bonneville. The initial testing looks good but as normal, Murphy can show up.
