I didn't have a very cool car in high school but it was very functional if you know what I mean...1960 Rambler with reclining front seats. And I worked part time at the Britannia Drive-In so always had a place to park!

my 1st 40 Ford, summer 1972. girlfriend, later to become ex-wife thought she would stick her finger in a hole on my 3-spoke steering wheel (we all had them) & joked about it being an engagement ring. real funny til she couldnt get her finger out. tried soap, grease, etc. nothing worked so I took off the wheel & went to the local fire station. they broke 2 ring cutters before giving up. went to the emergency room, docs tried everything they could think of & finally said brace yourself for the pain, we are just going to pull til it comes off. they got it off, but it was always a joke between the family Steve1st40.jpg

That's a nice car. I like it a lot, dropped axle, filled and drilled, running a full hood, the doors are flush with the body nice and agresiv chop spindle mounted alloy wheels with mc tires. I think the rear tires are a little too wide. But it must have a gnarly mill to need them big meats out back.

  10. I spent 8 or 9 months building a 53 Merc motor for my 50 ford in my Junior year...got it running enough to drive it down to the mail box but it still needed a lot of work and I now had a job....needed transportation to school and my full time job after school so I went to the used car lot and bought a red and white 56 Olds convertible. I went to school full time and worked 48 hours a week...little time for dating but I did a little on Saturday night. Mrs Rocky didn't come along 'till I was 26.

  11. Again with that coupe!! Man that thing is sweet!

  12. Thanks' its been a lot of fun for a long time. I helped the old famer feed his cows ,from a 29 phaeton that he took the rear off of to make it a truck ,to haul hay. I ask why him why he would not sell me the coupe. note it had tree growing threw it . He said he may need the gas tank from it . Long story short he finely sold it to me for $100. the rest is history .

I know the rule is pics or it didn't happen but lots of guys on this thread haven't posted pics so so here I go. My first car was a '51 Meteor 4 dr. and brown. Took my girlfriend to her grad in it. The insurance company made me get a safety on it. Steering box failed so I started looking for a new ride. By the way, this was 1967.
A couple of buddies were working on a '54 Ford 4 dr. Know bare with me on this; you have to use your imagination. They used 12 inch spring shackles on the rear. Since you could see the whole under carriage from the back, they painted everything (and I mean everything) silver. The original colour was a mint? green. They rattle canned it yellow. Since they were having fun, they added a narrow/wide/narrow racing strip on the driver's side from front to back. It was black. Now remember the silver paint? They had some left over and didn't want it to go to waste. So they polka-dotted the whole car. Over the yellow it looked kinda mauve. They weren't quite finished yet. They drilled 38 holes in the bottom of the muffler. Sounded really nice (flathead rumbly) at idle and crazy loud when you floored it.
The guys wanted to use it as a field car but it was too nice. Along comes me and my '51. I had paid $50. for it and we swapped cars plus $15. more. Great deal for me and they got to play in the field.
Cruising around one day a local cop pulls me over. Says he "Bedford rev this piece of shit up. I think your exhaust is too loud." I rev to about 800. "I said rev it up!" I do About 900. "I said REV it up!! Move over." and he reaches in and puts it to the mat. I said "You're going to blow up my (bad word) engine for christsakes." " Get that fuckin' muffler fixed or you gettin' a ticket next time I see you." I never did fix it.
When I would take my mom shopping, I pull out the spare and lay it by the back door so she could get in. She thought it was cool.
I have a ton of stories and like everyone here ,I could write a book. But I won't do it here.
By the way, I married my girlfriend and we've been together for 48 years total. And she hasn't kicked me out yet but threatens to ship me out to the shop. Promises promises.

I got my '38 Ford Coupe in the summer of '59 before my freshman year and my license at the end of my sophomore year in '61. the '38 was ready to go. I had it into college. For a little while I had a '40 sedan delivery and a '51 woody. there were about 2,000 in my school. On a normal day there were several neat cars in the lot. A Model A roadster with a nail head, a '29 A pickup with a built banger, an A sedan, two A Coupes with flatheads, a '34 pickup withs a flathead, a '49 convertible, a '40 coupe with a nail head, a '48 coupe with a 283 a '57 Chevy pickup with a built 261 six, a '40 Chevy woody, a '41 Caddy Hearse, Several early 50s Chevys & Shoebox Fords, Some tri 5s, a Matchless, two Indians, some Triumphs and Harleys. Even a Cushman and a couple of Vespas. We were mostly all friends and had some great times and more than a few races. When I graduated in '63 a lot of us went to JC and the parking lot looked a lot the same with other cars from guys from other high schools in the area. What a great time to be young. All my pictures were lost when my mom moved. There were some pretty girls too. The chrome dash in the '38 made some nervous, others played it well.

Well it didn't really happen, no pictures. ;)
But there's an old song about my high school days. My hot rod was my first car, a maroon 1949 Dodge Coronet coupe. I shaved and decked it, removed the door handles and used VW starter solonoids, painted the dash and inside window mouldings white then used a propane torch to give it a smoke tint, and used genuine oil cloth to redo the inside door panels.
Western Auto seat covers finished the kool look along with a knocker knob, white fuzzy dice, and an inside mirror muff. Had a single exhaust but split the pipe to look like duals. Under the hood I spared no expense. Painted that powerfull six with fluid drive red and added one of those small air cleaners with V-8's around the edges.
Wide white walls and 57 Caddy hubcaps with red painted rims. Yes, it was a hot rod in my mind. :p
My other sweetheart was born on a Valentines Day and became my wife the same year I graduated high school, got my first job, and first house, 1957. Yep we had a dream!
In 1958 I bought my first project, a 1931 Model A coupe. Had old cars ever since. Everything else is gone but my sweetheart is still with me keeping me mostly out of trouble and still cruising in my hot rods.

I didn't say there weren't pictures just that mine are gone. I need to get my brother's slides and see how to get them so I can post them. We went to all of the SF Bay Area shows back then and he took hundreds of slides. My high school sweet heart and I got engaged on Valentine's Day 47 years ago and She is still here. Lucky for me. :)

Way back when cameras were primitive we didn't take many pictures. Those I did take were lost, burned accidentally, or just vanished thru the years.
When I see the different threads here and other places of days gone by I am amazed and happy others did take time to photograph our past and saved what they could.
Still I have a pornografic memory and can see many things from my past as I look at and read other posts. Congratulations on still being with your Valentine. I really can't imagine life with out mine. She doesn't work on cars but brings tools, food, and encouragement. Besides I have her trained to wander thru junk yards full of bugs, mud, and junk yard dogs. She also carries the heavy parts at swap meets.

Funny, we are in Reno at a Hotel/Casino tonight. When we were here almost 30 years ago my wife 8 months pregnant with our youngest son helped me push start our '53 Chevy pickup in this very parking lot. I bet she'd do it tonight if I needed her. That's a hot rod girl! And you are so right about the pictures back then. Hard to take and hard to keep track of.:(

My '64 GTO .... worked on all through high school in auto shop.. I was lucky to have a auto shop that I could not only park at during school but work on in class. I did not name my car .. just called it my 64 goat. The other street racers in town had named for it though...[IMG]
