  2. Thank God you saved it from what it was becoming John!

The car was metamorphosing into something that was going to make me puke!

A few years back I bought some hemi stuff off a gentleman from Rochester.... he hwas unloading all his early hemi stuff.I bought a 354 and he swore it was an Oddy hemi.He went by name(on his card) Snoopy racing.(I think)
Anyhow.. he had a ton of stuff...and what really caught my eye was the stack injected 392 Donavan sitting in an old Hydro boat. It had Donavan heads as well.

At any rate..... I bought the complete engine.....

    Nice fella.

I really don't know if it was a engine belonging to Oddy or not.

    Great thread.

Going to make it to the gasser Series race this weekend at Empire?

  13. John, ah the sweet music of a vintage blown gasser, you've done an outstanding job now lets get that "stinking back" problem rearranged so that you can get some seat time. Thanks to you and the boys from Buffalo in keeping a sizable group of 60's gassers alive.

    John:

It must have been great to finally fire that baby off. I would have been grinning ear to ear. I know you must be proud, and deservedly so. It's a beautiful car.

Suuuuuunday Niagra! blasting over the radio ,WKBW in Buffalo. WOW the early 70's, those were the days for kick ass drag racing. I remember this car making many blasts down that track. I keep thinking the car was red at one time also. Correct me if I am wrong. That car is awesome. So cool it was brought back to life.

That Snoopy fella would be Bob Bialecki, another Rochester resident and another Mopar or nocar fanatic. Bob has had and continues to have some very tasty Mopar stuff as well as some very neat drag stuff. Bob and Ron Podsiadly, (Moparon) a past owner of Oddy's Austin, were and are still good buddies although seperated by a continent. Funny how Rochester guys and their cars figure into a lot of the history of hot roding.

You may be confusing Jim Oddy's Austin with Big John's Austin.

Oddy's car was always blue, I think you are thinking about "NEWELL" brothers car, that car was red and raced at Niagara also.
and Jim Zakia's anglia was red too.

Amen to that! It is hard to beat the look and sound of a 60's correct, let alone famous A/GS. Maybe someday Vintagegasser and I will make it back there to see you guys. Job well done.

I was going thru some photos for the Gasser Wars story and forgot about this one. It was on the cover of National Dragster April 2002. But the caption on the inside cover is about Jimmy's Opel, I guess I got lucky.
I remember when I saw the magazine cover, I had a BIG smile for about a week :D

The car which is in black in the 2nd photo was driven by a very good friend of mine "Buzzy" Krause R.I.P who helped me so much in the restoration.

If the sound of that hemi doesn't raise the hair on the back of your neck, you probably wandered on to this forum by mistake!! I hope that more of the history of this car will surface ... great stuff!

  26. In this Holley Hot Rod Reunion video Jim Oddy and the Austin appear at the 11:40 mark. Jim talks about the history of why he raced the Austin and also the lengths that John has gone through to restore it. He also even makes mention of the Dunkirk Drag Strip...lol
