I am going to try to install new glass in my 40 Ford Cpe. I have never attempted this job before,so any guidance would be much appreciated. Nothing useful found searching here. I have the old glass out and the body clean and painted where the gaskets go. I have new rubber gaskets from Bob Drake for the job. Questions are : Do the gaskets go on the glass first,or on the car first, and then install the glass panels second? Should I use some kind of silicon sealer or something else on the gasket to car body? How about sealer in the glass to rubber gasket mateing area? Would it be best to try the small double glass rear window first to gain some experience,or go for the two front windshield halves, one at a time, for the first try. I have heard a kind of vague description of putting a 1/8"(?) cord into the glass groove to be used to slowly pull out, rolling the edge of the gasket out to do the install. That kind of implys that the rubber gasket would be installed in the body first, right? I have one of those suction cup glass handles to try to manuver the glass into place with. As you can all see,I need some advice from the experienced! Thanks Up Front for any help!
just did it last week on a `40 . put the glass into the gaskets first. keep in mind that there are right and left gaskets. also top and bottom of the glass..get everything oriented correctly .right side goes in first. use small nylon cord in the outer groove and plenty of dish soap . have a helper inside to get it started and gently push while you pull the cord so the rubber lip goes up and over the lip of the windshield opening if you do it right it should go fast. the whole job about 10 minutes didn't instructions come with the gaskets?
WOW! Who would ever have guessed that I would get valuable advice from "Wonder Warthog"?? Heh-heh... Hey...all kidding aside, thanks for the very helpful advice! I'm not sure what you mean by "right side first". Would that be the passenger side? And no sealer on any surface huh? I think I need a dope slap...I didn't see any instructions. I will look again.
yes, passenger goes in first. the driver's side overlaps it in the center. then the center divider bar goes on..in and out. i have never used any sealer and have not had one leak .i guess it wouldn't hurt to use some , but i think that would be a big smeary mess to do good luck.. i'm surprised anyone knew who wonder warthog is
Theres gotta be a hamber in the area that would do it for a couple of beers. If i was in the area i would. Come on guys'
I'm in McKinney,Tex. about 20 mi. north of Dallas. I am on vacation this week and in the shop. I have 6 cold Shiners that are in the way.
36 3 window is on the mark---have done 5 coupes with no sealer-no leaks. Sometimes the rear small windows can be the hardest due to variables in gaskets/glass pattern,etc.-just take your time, use diluted dishwasher soap and the string trick and it should be relatively easy--sometimes the holes in the center are off for whatever reason and it makes it a little tough to get the center strip installed--all of this stuff requires two people.
Thanks to everybody for the help! I just got "the wink" from mama so I'm outta here for the night! WOO-HOO
