    Why not just use English? Most of our kids and grandchildren can not spell or write in cursive.

    Lots of good ones, as far as I know a bomb is used to blow stuff up.
    I always thought that calling a car a bomb was dumb no matter where it originated.

    Hmmm... haven't thought about that question for a long time (since I started 25 years ago). But it's really a very good question, as for a long time as a FNG I tried to figure out what others were talking about without looking too dumb myself (smile and nod)...

    So just to add to this thread:

    Acronyms you'll sometimes see in online forums:
    TTT = To The Top (same function as BTT or bump)
    POS = piece o' poo, or pile o' poo
    V8 = 8 cyl, with 4 on each bank, arranged in a V-shaped manner
    RB = Chrysler big block wedge with tall deck (440, and some other CID's I'm too lazy to write here)
    B = Chrysler big block wedge with the shorter deck
    CID = Cubic Inch Displacement
    SBF = Small Block Ford (the Ford 265, 289, 302, and 351W)
    351W = Ford 351 Windsor
    351C = Ford 351 Cleveland
    351M = Ford 351 Modified

    Car-guy jargon you'll sometimes see:
    Rocket = '49-64 Olds 303/324/371/394 V8
    cly = cylinder, and no I have never figured out why some folks spell it cly instead of cyl
    banger (as in 4 banger) = cylinder (& I've never seen it used for any other # of cyl's besides 4)
    inline/inliner = an engine with all cylinders all in one row, like a straight 6, slant 6, or straight 8
    wedge = a type of cylinder that is NOT a hemi (not sure if the head is actually wedge-shaped)
    FoMoCo = Ford Motor Co.
    Merc = Mercury
    Mopar = Chrysler (and Dodge, Plymouth, DeSoto)
    Bellytank = a lakes race car built out of a WWII plane's long-distance fuel tank
    Rod = hot rod, street rod. Also = connecting rod
    Restorod = a hot-rodded old car that has some more modern mechanics
    con rod = connecting rod
    head = cylinder head
    intake = intake manifold
    header = fabricated tubular replacement for exhaust manifolds
    zoomie = the type of header you see on supercharged drag race cars

    Man, it's really beyond the scope of this thread, but there is also non-slang, more official jargon such as "cowl", etc.
    This thread could go on forever, really. All good for the newbie, I guess.

    Know what's funny? Some terms mean different things to folks in other fields. I just remembered a guy once invited me to come over and check out his rods. I was expecting a garage full of street rods. Turns out he was into fishing...

    They are Advance Design trucks, no 'd' at the end of Advance, also include '47, the second half of the year. The first half of 1947 was the last of the Art Deco truck models.

    The combustion chamber is wedge shaped rather than a hemisphere or poly-sphere.

    Also, Mopar includes the Imperial models as well. I don't know if "Dodge Bros" cars are considered Mopar though.

    Haha, I actually knew all that a few years ago, but when you don't use the info it starts to go missing in your head! I imagine in 20 years I might not remember too much of what I had learned in a 20-year fling with cars. Now I can relate better to all the older guys I met that just couldn't seem to remember stuff correctly.... they had probably not used the info in 20-30 years.

    We were at a car show at a church benefit and one of the parishoners asked my buddy, "Hey, what does that FTF tag mean on your tail light?":eek: after a brief pause he looked at the guy and said "Feed the Faithful", without missing a beat. I think the guy told the entire congregation. Talk about thinking on your feet! Not sure if he ever found out the true meaning!:rolleyes:

    Belly button, is what some traditionalist call the SBC, I only use on 350/turbo350 combo.
    Retardet, is what Chevy owners call Ford owner, LOL the last one os only a joke.

    Wasen't there a guy on here with a signature that read something like;
    When it comes to ignition on mustang engines, it's really retardet, just like it's owner.

    There has been car rivelery, as long as there been more then one car manufactuer.
