I've got a Ford 9-inch I need to unload from the stash, and need some help identifying it. 43 inches center-to-center of the spring perches 55 inches bearing flange to bearing flange 61-ish inches outside-to-outside of drums. 10 x 2.25-inch drums 28-spline axles. It's passenger car, not truck. When I got it, there was talk of it fitting a Shelby Mustang, and a friend came into the shop a while back and asked why I had a '67-'69 Mustang/Cougar rear end. Any help with a positive ID would be appreciated. -Brad
I take it the original rearend tag is gone. Here are stock Mustang rearend widths: 65-66 Mustang 57.25 inches 67-70 Mustang 59.25 inches 71-73 Mustang 61.25 inches These measurements are from flange to flange. Subtract 5" for bare housing length. First gen Mustangs' spring perches were ~43" center-to-center. Additionally, measuring the axle bearing retainer/housing ends' dimensions will help narrow down the possibilities. '65-'73 Mustangs had small bearings. The four bolt holes are 3.312" x 2.00". Finally, most brakes in that era were were 1.75" or 2" wide. 2.25" brakes would probably indicate a performance application. Hope this helps. My '28 tudor project has forced me to become somewhat of a 9" archeologist. -Gary
No center section, just the housing. Looks like I'll need to pull the axles and measure the distance between flanges, and see what size the bearings are. -Brad
You probabably have a small bearing axle if axle has 28 splines. 31 spline axles have large bearings. Also you can tell by looking at the flange at the end of the housing. Here's some helful info. http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm http://www.mustangii.org/decoder/axle/ http://www.mustangsandmore.com/ubb/FordRearDimensions.html http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/9InchAxles.html
