Attached are a few pictures from DDS in Wingdale , NY from the sixties. These are a few of my favorites from hundreds of slides I have. Anyone out there frequent Dover? Bruce B
Cool pics. I don't think many people had enough money to afford a Vette race car around here back then.
I spent the entire Summer of 1964 at Wingdales Dover Drag strip. I was on Summer brake from General Motors Institute, and working construction in Dutches County around twenty miles away. The highlight of the Summer was seeing Garlits run 196 MPH on seven cylinders. He ran 200 MPH the night before at Island Drag way or some such place. He was approachable at any time. There was a guy with a VW with an injected Nailhead sitting in the front. Another guy named Hary, or Charlie Bowcher had a 32 Ford pick up Altered with an injected small block Chevy in it. Dover drag strip was way out in the country and you better bring a lunch unless you wanted to eat at there choke and puke. It was a great Summer, and the last I had as a free agent. The next year I was in the Army and drag racing was the last thing on my mind. I never made it back to Wingdale. I thought I saw another thread about Dover on the site. Check it out.
Can you share slides of any Willys, Falcons, Fairlanes, Rancheros, Altered wheelbase cars, etc... pretty much all of them. Thanks, Dan
I know you are familiar with it ME.GASSER go to doverdragstrip.com for thousands of pictures and threads about Dover. Pat
Hope you have a few shots of "ALLEY OOP" the Lyndwood in my avitar. It was the house car at Dover won 11 Low ET's in 1961 or 1962 and won the Pepsi points trophy.
"Alley Oop" in the pits next to "Swamp Rat III" 1962 the day they swapped out the main bearings for used ones and turned Low ET
Great picture and story. Anyone remember a group of guys from Danbury, CT. that ran a SBC dragster? I think Allen Arbesman was one of the guys, I went to Norwalk Tech School (Norwalk, CT.) in the early sixties with him and a few other guys.
That would be "Danbury Cambusters" I was a charter member until I joined The Navy in 1959. I believe that the car was originally flathead powered.
What a great job they did on the restoration of Carlie's truck. It looks just like I remember it. Thanks for the post.

Neat to see a shot of that chopped up primered Vette...bought the front wheels from that guy to use on a Lyndwood altered project, and eventually sold the rolling chassis for $200 or so. Oh well. The fellow who built that Vette was quite a mechanic, I remember his garage was full of really trick stuff he had built.
Been Looking For Info on that Primered Vette for 5 years...Heres the Photo we have of it (the only one of two )...was it ever painted ? who owned it?
Don't think I ever knew his name, but I think he was from New Rochelle if memory serves...someone will know him as he was a pretty accomplished racer, and a lot or guys came from down there.
I ran a 66 mustang there (225 HP,4 Speed, 4.56 rear) in 67 & 68. I have a picture of me somewhere racing a vette, I'll see if I can find it & post it( did once on here) I think I F/S & had to run against 57' chevy convert with a 283 with 2 fours on it! I think he had a garbage pail cover with 2 holes cut in it for a carb base!!lol He beat me most of the time! lol JimV
