Enzo Ferrari, photographed in his first year of racing (1919) behind the steering wheel of his CMN racing car. If anyone knows more about this photo correct the caption.

The Italian's prefer to call the car an CMN Isotta Fraschini. The photo i assume is from the 1919 Targa Florio @ Circuito Madonie. He retired after 3 laps of a 4 lap, 432km race.

He was also an Olympic Gold medalist.

Thanks again for the correction Vit. I did some reading of an earlier 4 inch race so i decided to delve a little further and came across a set of photos from the '14 TT. I didn't know what to make of the car in the photo when i saw it but it did look somewhat American in design unlike the Sunbeam of eventual winner Kenelm Lee Guiness, below. I think in future i'll delete the captions when i post a pic.

Indy is just around the corner and I thought I would share some photos. Instead of the winners I have some of cars that placed back in the field or dropped out. These give us the opportunity to study photos that have not had a lot of exposure.

This photo shows... 1913 indy 500 - Gil Anderson in his Stutz who went out after 187 laps w/camshaft trouble.

George Clark and Tom Alley in the 10th place Tulsa-Wisconsin at the 1913 Indy 500 performing a brake test. Was this a safety measure every team had to perform? Maybe some of the Indy afficionados here can school me on this.

1910 Indy 100-mile Remy race - Howdy Wilcox in his National.

Don't remember what early race it was but I remember the announcer with the megaphone being called leather lungs.

Harry Grant's Isotta Fraschini didn't fair too well at Santa Monica in the 1914 Vanderbilt Cup, suffering piston damage on the first lap.

  17. [IMG] Here we have Gus Seyfried, who drove the "rakish" steam-powered White Flier (shouldn't that be Flyer?) to a 59 second mile on the muddy track at Tanforan on 06-December-1908. Barney Oldfield could not do better than 1 minute, 3 seconds. Seyfried was from the area. I like the look of the car's front end. Note the steam exhaust pipe ahead of the cockpit. During a later qualifying heat, a "defective pilot light" put the car out of commission. This is from the 07-December-1908 San Francisco Call.

Rumor has it that it was built around a radiator cap.

    1904 Thomas Model 27 racer
    </SLIDETITLE><SLIDEDESC>Company: Kruse
    Location: Phoenix, AZ
    Date: January 24, 2008
    Sold at: $1,188,000

Fitted with an amazing amount of brass and all is nearly perfect. Painted wood wheels, white period tires. Detailing is immaculate throughout. No shocks fitted, engine compartment and interior spotless.
There was some speculation surrounding the race history of this car, and despite its excellent condition throughout, the price paid was a lot to spend for a car with stories. Undoubtedly rare, but well sold

Bob, what do you know of the engine in this car? I have a picture somewhere of another Maxwell 12 cylinder car from around 1908 that was going to be used for some speed runs but it looks different from this car.-Jim
