Drum brakes are faster. You can adjust drum brakes to where the turn freely without any brake drag. Get a set of 61 thru68 full size chevy hubs & bearings and convert your 55 to tapered roller bearings. change to a dual mster cyl. disk brakes always drag a bit. electric fan -drum brakes adjusted loose- skinny front tires inflated to 60 pounds = 1/2 second faster ET. My 55 2 dr wagon has drum brakes and im keeping them.
I ended up putting disks on the front. It stops pretty good (not that I drove it that much before I pulled the motor). I scored a 12 bolt posi (3:73) out of 69 camaro for a really good price. I'll be swapping that in next. Btw chuck...Coupes are for chickens...lol
Please consider the old CRAGAR deep dish chrome reverse rims or Fenton type slotted mags. Modern tires sized like the old E-60/14's and L-60/14's My L's measure a modern 298-53/14" size and I still have them out in my garage on my 9" x 14" Fenton slotted mags. as well as my 7" x 14's the E's are on. I did have the Chrome reverse on my '67SS/RS Camaro car before the slots. pdq67
A couple updates... I fitted a 1969 Camaro 3:73 12 bolt posi. I set the pinion angle and welded on new perches....
The motor is cleaned up, painted, and ready to go back in once I paint the firewall and front frame components.
Like low budget said the drums ought to stop it just fine. If I had to go with discs unless I was just wanting something high zoot I would go with GM metrics, they work are cheap and easy to find in a about any autozone in the nation.
A little more progress ... Blasted the frame and firewall Painted the frame with por15 and getting ready to clean up the firewall and lay down some white paint.
I'm moving the battery to the trunk and filled some of the holes in the firewall. I shot the firewall single stage gloss black. I did the dash too....
