How ultra cool is that??!! Would love to see close-up shots of the dash/ gauge lay-outs of the two roadsters on the right.
'Sports Cars and Hot Rods' is a great period book. Lou seemed to be featured regularly in Fawcett books. In that above lead photo two very famous A roadsters. John Athens "Elvis" roadster and Don Ferrera A with Don seated. The 3w with the '39 taillight I believe is Al Balzekian's. Isky is standing at the rear of the coupe next to Lou Baney at the centre of the photo (Lou in the button down Isky in T).
Maybe something like this can be resurrected, I,m sure if Jive Bomber ,Ryan or other J J administrator would say lets start meeting 1st Saturday of the month at _______ at 7:00 pm would attract a pretty good crowd must bring HOTROD
Lots of cool stuff in this picture. Nowadays we don't see "shops" at gas (service?) stations since we don't have them anymore. Gathering at your local convenience store, about the only place to gas up your cars, is really frowned upon. The cars in the picture are a view of what many try to emulate today. Thanks for posting this it is a great way to start the day.
You know it's a hard-core, high class environment when it's frequented by owner/drivers of "coupés". Speculating further, since "coupé" comes from the French "couper" - "to cut off, shorten", wonder if that's where the term "short" (as in the Beach Boys Shutdown -"Two cool shorts standin' side by side") comes from? Anyway, hot rods and customs are all about belonging to an exclusive automotive brotherhood. The HAMB is carrying on Lou Baney's tradition.
When I was a teenager in the late 70s and early 80s,we always met up at a gas station that a racer friend worked at.Car talk, tuning, and a few adult beverages was the order of how things went.Everything from race fuel to gear ratios was discussed, bets were made, and tall stories were told.I miss those days.
Worked at shell station in a bad part of Stockton back in the day. The owner didn't want our hot rod buddies hanging around till he was robbed at close one night. After that it was okay for them to hang around. (Never was robbed again...ha ha )
It is already being done in many areas. TNGA is one for instance.; Look it up: Thurday Night Garage Association. Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by The Rabid Whippet, May 14, 2010.
A few locals hereabouts keep trying for a 'hot rod nite' at different locations, but soon as we get a few 'hop-ups' gathering, in drive the wannabes with the mid '50s stuff and the '60s-'70s. In the 'old days', (San Jose/Santa Clara) we'd gather at gas stations and drive in restaurants (outside) Cars were 'conspicuous', as they were mostly Model A thru '34, some fendered, but mostly 'stripped down'. Cops got onto where we were gathering, watched us closely. When more than 2 or 3 left at the same time, we were going someplace to race. Now, hot rods gather, guys 'bench race', compare solutions to things like steering placement, pedals, and 'period stuff'. Tuners are sometimes present, but it's kind of ironic: Cops come by and group everybody. ("Them tuners are ALWAYS looking for a race..."-Elwood P. Fuzz) "Keep an eye on the old guys, too...they're usually itchin' to 'peel rubber'." Ah, humor. Takes me back to a better time...
Was approached just today about trying to get a few hoodlums to hang out at a local diner for BS session once a month or so. Gonna try it and see what comes of it. Can't hurt right! Joe
I see Lou standing in the just left of the top back row. What nice looking cars. Most with original paint and a few "look good" goodies. T'would be nice to go back if only in a dream. Jay Y.
We have a BS session every Tuesday evening around 5 PM until whenever near a Subway sandwich shop in Lake Placid, Fla. I'm 70 and the youngest of the bunch. Lots of neat old cars and some new ones also. Tons of BS floating around. No hassles from any police. We are all to old to cause trouble.....LOL. Terry (X-IHRA Tech Man for 22 1/2 years.)
The Club I am in tried a Breakfast meet at a 50's Diner don't know how it turned out as I had to work that Saturday. it was 1st conceived for a Sunday which was no problem ,A local Flea Market has a Guitars & Cars every 3rd Sunday sometimes it draws a huge crowd more like in the cooler months then again its the hottest part of the day need more Saturday night gatherings
The first Saturday afternoon of the month the Just Us Hot Rod Hoodlums meet and have a BS session at Howlin' Wolf Hot Rods "deep in da weeds" of Wellston, Mo. The garage was originally a blacksmith shop converted into a auto repair shop way back in da day. It has that "old school look to it and the "hood" surrounding it has seen it's better days but once a month the appearance of "hoodlums driving jalopies has made the "hood" a happenin' place to be when the boys are in town. We Bar-B-Q and play the blues while we play with the rides!! We have guys as young as 26-7 to 78 years old. All the local "hood rats" respect the tradition as we've been doing this for 30+ years.
Rain caught some of the roadster guys last evening here in Lake Placid, Florida. It was nice all day then about an hour after we all showed up and some were still eating in the Sub Way it poured rain. Oh well.....in every ones life a little rain must pour ! Terry (aka X Tech Man)
