So my Dad (Fred) left us some slide photos. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor in 1949-1953 as a Navy photographer. There are a bunch of pictures and I'll post as I get time, but here are a few of how he spent the Korean War. PS Because Hawaii was still a US Territory when he arrived, he received additional Hazard Pay!
1927 Dodge - Dad had one in college and then came across this one in Pearl. He used to make cash by taking the drivers door off and delivering telephone books in the San Mateo CA area.
A few more ... The one on the bottom left is a Studebaker I think - though the Fords around that time look a lot like that too. The one on the bottom right looks like a large Jaguar after zooming in on the Leaping Cat radiator fill.
Great pics! My dad was also stationed in Hawaii in the 50s (although the late 50s). He was there when it officially became a state. Said the whole place was nothing but a party for a month. I can't even imagine the fun he must have had there with the wahinis! - RBR
Just happened on this post. Great photo's Skeezix! From what I hear from the old timers, Sports Car racing was as big, if not bigger than Drag Racing and Circle Track here in the islands during the 50's and 60's. Please post up a link to those other non HAMB pics when you get them up. I love seeing old Hawaii even if not car related! Thanks for sharing these, made my day.
Thanks for a great post. Those slides look fresh as yesterday. Not a bad way to spend the 'war'. Aloha
Reminds me of the 8mm color film I took of some Roundy-Round races at a ball park in Oahu coming home from Korea in 1954-----Don
Oh man, would love to see that! That must've been at the old Honolulu Stadium in Moiliili, demolished in '76 and now a park.
Very cool! Thanks for posting those.... Willy <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
I think the first couple of slides are from the old air strip/dragstrip out in Kahuku. I have a friend here who will most likely know that car with the caddy tailights.
I have started to add some to the following page for those interested http://www.wix.com/FredsSlides/FredsSlides
Yep - I started through the first box of misc stuff. HAMB friendly attached and more at FredsSlides.com listed under Cali cars - This box seems to have a selection of Cars Show Snaps from 1949 based on the Factory offerings. Some cars i can't ID so please join in in identifying: The sign says: SPEEDWAY ROADSTER Built and owned by Larry Neves, this car is powered by a Mercury V-8 engine (racing) ... 12 full months were taken to construct the car at the cost of $5200... Painted Tommy "the Greek"..
Great photos.. and thanks for sharing them This 1941 Buick (great photo by your father) is Pierre Paul's car. It had a photo in the 1951 Custom Cars Annual (Trend book 101). The padded top was made by Hall. I'm not sure if the car ever had a full feature in any of the early magazine. I have a few small photos of it from a selection of magazine, but not a feature. Any more custom cars from that show... or others? Here are tow more photos I have of the car
Dad was in the insurance business - some sad photos here of cool rides and one great looking convert.
