Default 1955 Chevy Gasser ... White Lightnin

This picture was taken at Lions around 1966.

A good friend who owned it back then was curious if anybody knows what might have happened to it in the San Fernando Valley area ?

It was sold without it's 396 & Hilborn injection.

Had a straight axel with parallel leafs, Lexan side glass, Muncie 4 speed with Olds rear end. Aluminum door pannels, fiberglass hood.

He said the rear wheel arches were done very well...clean cut outs with a rolled edge. The body was real clean too.

Hello Searcher, I built the WHITE LIGHTNIN' '55 from a $125.00 East L.A. wrecking yard find in 1964. I cut the wheel wells with a saber saw and brazed copper tubing on the outside the flare was bondo. I sprayed it, and many of my friends cars, in my Dad's garage with white lacquer, which is when I was given the name FOGGER. An old friend, Jim Spencer cut out a stencil for White and freehand painted all the other lettering. Not high tech but I was 20 at the time. '57 Olds rear axle with springs relocated under the frame and different gear sets with a home made spool depending on the motor. Always a 4-speed, and ran 11:21 at Carlsbad during a big bucks bracket race in '66, which I won. At the time the 327 motor belonged to Dave Christie and had a Chet Herbert #50 roller and Mondello heads with a Edelbrock crossram and afb's. Ran the car at the '67 Winter Nationals at Pomona with a friends 427 big block with hilborns and a vertex. Trans broke on first run of B/Gas eliminations. It had run 10:80 @ 129 mph at Lions. I sold the car after the Winter Nationals and have often wondered what happened to it as I don't recall the buyers name. The front axle, when I owned it, had a transverse spring with willy's spindles and gutted brakes. The front frame and axle were built by Fletcher and Brown Race Cars in Lakewood, Ca. I had a great time building the car with an old friend, Vince D'Arco, and our names were on the rear quarters when I owned it. If any of you Hamber's know of it's whereabouts I'd like to know. Quite a suprise to see the old gasser on the HAMB. The FOGGER

I'll have to get a scanner as I have many pictures of the car during the build. It was originally a yellow body with a white roof 6 cylinder and 3 speed. I'll try to post soon. The FOGGER

My friend isn't PC friendly...So I have to get info from him via phone.
He said he thought it said Glendale Speed center on the rear quarter pannels when he got it ?
He also wasn't positive about the parallel leafs. The front grill was aluminum. And no front brakes.

He can't remember who he sold it to, but he did have it in the summer of 67, and thought he bought it at a shop down towards L.A. He said he had it about 2 years.

I don't remember your friends name but there were about eight of us drag racers who rented a garage on Rowena Ave near Silver Lake. Glendale Speed Center was in no way involved with my old car but did sponsor the Malfunction Chevy II owned by Richard Scott who was one of my co-renters at the garage. After the '67 Winter Nationals I sold the body and the engine owner, Rollie Lamper, sold the 427 engine and trans to the same buyer. The engine was originally a 396 that M&R had bored. I was sponsored by M&R Machine on Temple St in L.A. and their name was on the trunk. When I used a steel hood I had Model A latches on the front corners, the clips can be seen in your picture, but when I added the glass one I made angle brackets that attached to the cowl and hood pins on the radiator cross brace. Brings back good times at the old strips. The FOGGER

Fogger: A guy who is restoring an old Pro/Stock Mopar I worked on in 1973 sent me this link. Imagine my suprise when I opened it. I completely forget about you using my engine that time at Carlsbad. We were having the time of our lives at that garage on Rowena Ave and never knew it. I would go back to 1965 in an instant if I could live it over again!!!!!!! dchristie.

Fellas, this is good stuff, to remember the ole' days and catch up with your friends who made your memories is priceless. My good friend of 50 years and I still talk of cruising in his 55' Nomad, he was 16 and I was 14, the car was red lacquer, white roof, 327, 4-speed, chrome reverse wheels, 65 Impala black buckets and no front bumber, big front springs, it was 1968 and it seems like yesterday. Hey the white lightning 55' looked awesome. Thanks for reading. I really need to put some time in on my 55' but this HAMB Jive is addicting.

I've been hearing about this thread and finally found it! I love those engine shots! Who said stock steel rocker arms are junk? This car went fast without those high dollar roller rockers. Y'all's kinda making me miss my orange car.

I dunno, Maybe its cus were in So.Cal

But i remember as a Kid in the early '70's every gear head in my Little town had a Bad Ass Ride.

Not like the Tonka Trucks & 40 thousand dollar Euro box's Kids have today.

I have an Uncle that was in his Late teens & early 20s then and he had some BITCHEN stuff, Wish i had his Pics.

One that stand out was a '54 2dr Post Bel Air, 2x4 409, 4spd, & Posi .. Crome front suspension, Straight axle, Fat & Skinny Cragars Painted Forest Green Metallic.

They striped a REAL 409 Impala for the running gear !!!

Searcher, Great to see more shots of the '55. Before we put the big block in I cut out the firewall to clear the heads and Vertex mag. Made the throttle linkage out of aluminum blocks with oil-lite bushings. Actual pedal was a freeze plug brazed to the rod. I had the roll bar bent by Mercury Tube in Glendale and Dave Bettis, who was associated with the LA Roadsters, welded it in. Dave and his shop are long gone but he was located in the Los Feliz area east of Hollywood. Bettis had worked for old man Walker in the Walker's Muffler shop on Hyperion Ave. Still hoping someone locates the old gasser. The FOGGER

I got together with "Fogger" today at the Road Kings car show, and he brought out a bunch of pictures of "White Lightnin". It was great meeting him ( super nice guy ) and also getting to see his 32 3 window.

This is a picture of him at Lions getting a bit of air.

I hope he will elaborate on this shot.

The shop that did the front suspension and frame was Dick Fletcher and Ted Brown. Ted's still around the hot rod scene and was well known for his T-buckets. Fletcher/Brown Race Cars was in Lakewood, Calif. The front end on my car was a straight tube with Willy's spindles and gutted brakes. Stock '55 Chevy steering. The FOGGER

Cam isn't that radical but to clear the Comp Cams roller rockers and poly locks I had a shop tig the spacers onto the valve covers then had them surfaced for a positive gasket seal. The SB is 360 inches, 10-1 compression, the old GM 461 Mondello heads are off the '55, 10 lb Schiefer flywheel, Muncie M-20 4-speed, narrowed '58 Olds rear axle with Henry's axles and a Dana posi. I still have an old Chet Herbert #50 roller cam and may put it back in someday. The setup is basically what I ran in the '55 except more cubic inches and the mild cam. The FOGGER

Searcher, Good meeting you and your friends today. The above shot was one of the last times I ran the small block at Lions. The car was initially set up for bracket racing only and was very consistent so easy to run the right number. When we put the big block in my partner wanted to run B/Gas NHRA. Problem was the wheelbase was stretched about 2" thus making it an Altered. So during the '67 Winter Nationals we moved the front axle back to make it legal for the gas class. The best run with the 427 was 10.80 @ 129 mph at Lions. It was a fun ride power shifting at 8000. That was real old time racing, no rev limiter, no ignition box, no stab and steer automatic trans. Thanks for posting the shots. The FOGGER

Tell us a story " Fogger "

Ok Searcher, I've had the 3W since '82. Built the chassis in the late '70s and found this Ford body at the Pomona swap meet in '82. Been driving it since '86. It is all Ford sheet metal. In '99 returning from the Bakersfield March meet an old man in a Dodge van ran into me hitting my car twice. Fortunately no one was injured and the CHP determined that he was 100% at fault. So with the help of the body man that I had purchased the body from and the insurance settlement we straightened the fenders, bumpers, hood and grill shell. Then chopped the top 2 1/4" and filled the roof with a '64 Mustang coupe top. All the body work and chop was done in a backyard in Culver City by one of the best metal finishers to ever work on old Fords. I painted the sheet metal in my garage with black acrylic lacquer. I've always enjoyed this car and to me looks much better with the chop. See you guys at the LA Roadster show. The FOGGER

Like everyone, I am enjoying this thread very much. The picture find and the timing of the replies are amazing.

As an aside to the topic here, it might be of interest that the very last pass, ever, down the Lion's quarter mile was made by a '55.

It was months after The Last Drag Race, and for sure was the very last pass, made by a garage-built drag car driven on the street illegally.
The pass was made in the left lane as the bulldozers were tearing up the starting line area of the right lane.
The hardhats on the 'dozer crew were yelling and making a big scene, and it was drizzling, but the hook was there and the 13:1 LS-7 / M-22 / Olds was speaking through a set of Lakewood Pos-A-Tractions and it found its mark halfway through second gear and made 7,400 in 4th at what would have been the lights at the big end.

I always thought that it was very appropriate that Lions was finally shut down not by a construction crew that day but an open-header owner-built '55 running low 10s at OCIR and driving there and back on its own tires, in true hot-rodder style.

I don't get to post much due to time but it's so cool to read thoughts written by people who I understand and can relate to. Great membership here, for sure !

Long live the postwar-style junkyard-built American Hot Rod !!

Searcher, The above pictures were taken before I removed the vent windows and replaced all the side glass with Lexan. The hood also is steel and when we installed the big block I used a fiberglass unit. These were probably some of the last shots taken when I was still running the small block, which belonged to Dave Christie. Car ran 11.21 @ 121 at Carlsbad. Dave went on to work on Mopar pro-stock cars and was very successful. Again see you guys at the Roadster Show. The FOGGER

Thanks for the added info, Fogger. My buds and I have been enjoying talking about the old gasser. Where were the last pictures taken ?

It would be cool if it turned up someplace. I'll keep after it.
I was thinking because it was a pretty nice car and build it might just be out there someplace in a backyard or ?

And yes, see you at LARS...we're ( me and the two guys that were in the San Fernando pic ) are going to Limeworks tomorrow.

Those shots were taken at the shop we rented on Rowena Ave near Silverlake. There were 8 of us that shared the shop. Carl's was the body shop next door our shop was to the right. I had access to a spray room (not a booth) where I painted choppers and hot rods. Doing paint jobs and changing automatic trans Chevys to 4-speeds was how I could afford the '55. I'd work 40 hours a week on customers projects and 40 hours a week at night on the '55. Those were the days.

Jeez...what a terrific thread! I've really enjoyed following this and the photos. The pics of the two "kids" (makes me feel old!) wrenching on the engine at San Fernando '67 looks like a shot out of Two Lane Blacktop. How cool is the HAMB!!!

As an aside, there was a White Lightning 55 that roamed San Diego streets-especially 2nd street cruise in ElCajon, in the mid 70's. A white business coupe with "White Lightning" lettered in blue or black (IIRC on the quarters). I seem to recall it ran Cragars, but I don't recall it having a straight axle setup??? So it must have been a different car? Don't know what it was running, but heard it was quick. Always dug the car (I had a 55 sedan at the time too) and wondered what happened to it.

Nothing new, but still hopefull.

It had enough special features ( lexan windows, etc. ) that it would be pretty easy to ID.

We had a purple 55 here in 1968 with a straight axle.
I remember that it didnt turn to the left properly and he had to back and cut a couple of times to cruise thru the Kokomo Drive in.
Many years later I asked him what happened to the car and he said he sold it to a guy in the service who took it out west somewhere and was killed when it didnt turn left enough on a mountain road.

My 39 Ford was the same when I got it...wouldnt turn sharp to the left but it was a simple adjustment to the draglink.

Heres a pic of the nice dash Fogger built in the White Lightnin. Also with lots of features that would make the 55 identifiable.

And an old time slip from a pass at Lions that was probably made with the 427.....Fogger ?
These are from Foggers scrap book.

It's not JUST how cool as hell the story is on the car, or how old friends signed up and came in for one post after their ears started burning, but the fact that the car in question is so damn nice just raps it up. Top it off with a little internet magic of putting people together in seconds even with decades of distance and you got yourself "The HAMB".

Fogger, I remember White Lightning well..... In the early spring of 1967, I got the bug to make my 1955 Chevy "150" into a gasser. I'm not sure why, but I ended up in your shop on Rowena Ave. I was buying my parts from Glendale Speed Center so they may have recommended your shop, I don't remember after all these years. I also talked to Blairs In Pasadena but I had a bad experience with them on a set of F.I. heads so I chose to have someone in your shop do the work on my 55. I don't remember who that person was and you stated that you were doing paint so it was not you.

Any way, your car was inside the shop the day I dropped by. I instantly liked the stance and said that I wanted to have my car look the same. They added the straight axel, flipped the rear springs to the top of the housing and added traction bars. I was quite happy with the work even though it sat a little higher than I anticipated.

I worked at Acme Rents of Hollywood and several weeks later a guy came in and told me to get over to your shop right away with the car. Upon arival, I was told that the wrong tubing was used to make the axel. He showed me the 4130 he should have used, and said that I should be really careful driving home so the axel would not break. Everything turned out fine after he replaced the axel.

I would also like to find my old 55. I owned this car 3 times. I lived on Canada Blvd. And people were always coming up to my door wanting to buy my cars. I would often throw out a wild price and sometimes they would agree to it. (usually rich kids from La Canada) Then they would break or crash them and their parents would ask me to come and remove the cars for them.

BTW I am a Road King member and I remember your 32 at our show last year. I think that is Larry Tadlocks 34 next to you in the picture you posted.

Thanks for the memories hope you enjoy the pictures of my 55 from May 1967..............Clay

O.K. if you love 55 chevy gassers like I do you may not want to look at this.

I sold this straight axel car soon after this picture was taken in 1997. A guy by the name of Pete (last name witheld) from Reno purchased it. Shortly thereafter he lost control on a back road and rolled it over and over. He was badly injured and almost died. The roll bar saved his bacon.

Wouldn't it though......

I can picture it in some garage or warehouse all covered up with junk... but with super nice patina
That would be too cool.

What a bitchin history blast, reminds of the ol 1950's days in Grand Island, Ne., our car club the C-Dans were very active drag racers, sharing motors and other parts all around. Creams on the H.A.M.B. has some great pix in his profile of those racing times., check em out. Great stuff dudes. ~sololobo~

Got my version from my buddy sign painter yesterday. I think he nailed my vision of what the Florida "White Lightnin" would look like.

I've been Gone too long.....

That's too Cool ... I'll call my Buddy who owned this 55 for awhile and tell him it's been recreated in Florida.

By the way, here's an old T he dug up awhile back from a trip to the drags.

I sold this straight axel car soon after this picture was taken in 1997. A guy by the name of Pete (last name witheld) from Reno purchased it. Shortly thereafter he lost control on a back road and rolled it over and over. He was badly injured and almost died. The roll bar saved his bacon.
WOW...based on what is left, he was lucky to survive.

M&R was the initials of the owners, Richard (Booty) Mark and Donnie Ross, Their shop was on Temple Street, LA. Both were great guys. I last saw Booty at Eric Averil's funeral many years ago. He still may be in business in Glendale.

Just happened upon this thread while searching for something else. What a great story and "Killer 55 Chevy Gasser". Nice to see the original builder(Fogger ..beautifull 3W by the way!) fill in all the details on the car. I will post this link on the 55 Chevy Gasser Owners wanted thread.

Why the fuck would you post this in this thread? Makes no sense? Great looking car. Here is to hoping that the car shows its face one day.

The FOGGER
Hey Fogger,
Does the name Jim Hendricks ring a bell? He raced a 55 "White Lightning" in the 60's and I believe it had a BBC w/ 4 speed. I'll ask him tomorrow if he remembers when, where and who he bought the car from. I'll also see if he has any pictures. Vic

Found out that my friend may've owned this car and ran it at Lion's with a tunnel rammed 427 w/ 4 speed in the 60's. Everything he described including setback engine and doghouse is the same. He said when he got it, it was without an engine and trans but had an Olds/Pontiac rearend. It probably had a SBC before he got it because he had to make a few mods for clearance. His best time was an 11.0. I'll get some pix from him and post them later. He thought about possibly cloning that car sometime.

That sure looks like the 55 I looked at in 1975 at "street rods" in whittier, It was in the back of the lot in pretty bad shape but had a 427 with a tarantula intake, glass hood and trunk lid , cragars, 2 black buckets and a old roll bar, I was 15 years old and I wanted It bad, but they wanted $1100.00 firm,I had about $200 dollars to my name then. They said it was a "FAMOUS LOCAL RACE CAR"

What a cool thread. To think that some of the owners (or friends to owners) have shared their memories and pictures for all of us to read. Wow, it doesn't get any better than that!!!!

Finally got some pictures of my buddy's ex-race car from the 60's. It is the same car Fogger built and raced. Jim can't remember where he bought it but think it may be at a swap meet or who he sold it to. About 20 or so years ago, a Black painter by the name of Art from Compton (who knew Jim was the previous owner) told him the car was for sale in Compton so he went to look at it. When Jim saw the car he couldn't believe it, someone had turned it back into a street car. All the racing stuff like roll bar, Olds rear end, the aluminum work, etc. were gone. The rear quarters were also replaced so no radiused fenderwell and it even had a back seat. Jim didn't even bother to ask what the guy wanted and left. Jim said that was the end of the road for White Lightnin. So if anyone's looking for this car, you won't find it as a Gasser.
When Jim Hendricks owned it, he lived in Playa del Rey. He recalls owning it for about 5 years but when Lion's closed, he sold it. So doing the math, he probably bought it around 67, maybe 68. When he ran it at Lion's, it ran a 440 BBC with an Edelbrock 2500X tunnel ram with two 660 center squirters, Sig cam and AFR heads built by Red Vanics(sp?) of Hot Rod City in Torrance, CA. His best time was 11.02 @ 136 mph.
A) In picture with his daughter, that would've been about '71. Notice the gauge panel, speaker screen on the speedo and partial dog house.
B) Picture of engine, set back firewall is identical to the original.
C) Some exterior shots of the car sans old sponsor and new sponsorship by Doug Thorley and Permatex. Also notice hole in hood where injectors used to exit.
D) Red 55 was his tow car - it ran in the low 12's...
Jim restored tri-fives at his shop in Gardena until he retired about 11 years ago so he knows his Chevies. If he says it's the same car, I wouldn't doubt him. He still does beautiful work on his own cars and is a wealth of knowledge. He was very instrumental in aiding my build on my 55 Gasser.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but White Lightnin has met its demise! Vic

Well at least we know what became of it. I think this definately happened to more that one 55 chevy that was put back on the street with its history erased... At least the pics exist.

Wow!!! Thank's for the update and pictures. At least we know more of it's history... that's very cool. Good to hear it made more fast passes at Lions.
Sounds like it's fate was linked to the old Drag Strip.
