    Day 1 Thursday Aug 14th
    Livonia, MI to Davenport, IA
    452miles

I worked till 4pm and blasted home where I found Megan already there and her stuff for our adventure packed in Big Olds already. I quickly changed and threw my stuff in Big Olds as well. My folks and sisiter were there to bid us farewell and snapped a couple of photos of me and Megan.

As some might remember, last weekend we installed a stereo in Big Olds for the first time. Of course Megan and I both brought a bunch of CD’s, Megan even in a Big Olds matching case.

I usually take a photo of the starting mileage for a trip
    [IMG]

We hit the highway and after 10 miles he was still running cool. I can’t thank my buddy Jim for working his butt off all week to make sure Big Olds was ready for a 5,000+ mile journey.

Megan gives the stereo directions a look over. I’m in charge of the driving, she's in charge of the music.

A couple of hours down the road we come upon my favorite exit in Michigan.:D
    [IMG]

A couple of hours after that we reached IN…..

We were just a few miles from Lake Michigan were I imagine the sunset was spectatular but watching from the highway was as close as we were going to get this trip.

The IL sign wasn’t as easy to get
    [IMG]

I can’t remember what town but we always see this sign for a Tiki Motel so we thought we’d stop and check it out…..the sign was the only thing even remotely tiki.

I don’t see us staying there anytime soon.

Made it to west of the Mississippi River and stay at the usual exit we like to stay at. Once in the room we were alittle wired still so I did my finger and toe nails to match Big Olds. :D
    [IMG]

    Nite, nite

    Day 2, Friday Aug 15th
    Davenport, IA to Omaha, NE
    375 miles

Woke up to blue skies and sunshine with just a slight nip in the air…perfect for topless cruzn. The place we like to stay at overlooks the mighty Mississippi River. One of these days Megan wants to swim across it. When that happens I’ll video it and post it on the HAMB.

    We didn’t stop this time
    [IMG]

Was the only classic anything we saw all day
    [IMG]

These gas station just crack us up. We don’t have them in Michigan or Ohio:D
    [IMG]

    Entering Nebraska
    [IMG]

Our first stop once we arrived in Omaha was at SoloLobo's (aka Larry) shop in the downtown warehouse district. We were kinda fimiliar with the location because we had been there last year when Larry thru a party at Retro Rocket, his vintage clothes and furniture place last year when we rolled thru town. We parked Big Olds in the alley near his front door and snuck up on him to surprise him.

After hugs all around and alittle visiting Megan and I decided to take awalk around to stretch our legs and see the sites. We didn't get one full block from Larry's place when this "offical" looking SUV does a U-turn and pulls right up next to us. Low and behold it was a pal of Malcolm's, Dan, who we met last month during the Salina, KS KKOA event. He's a batallion chief for the fire dept and his station is right down the block from Larry's shop. He didn't know we'd be there but spotted the pink cap and recognized it so he stopped to say hi and chat.

Soon after Dan stopped what do ya know, Malcolm AKA Nick drive's up. Unbenounced to us he went into work early so he could get off early to hang out with us girls before the party tonight
    [IMG]

The four of us chatted for bit then Nick escorted us around the warehouse district for an afternoon of shoping cute and quaint little shops.

We stopped at our favorite area ice cream shop for a yummy break but were bummed that our bud CarKiller, who also loves this place, wasn't there to ejoy it with us. Next time sweetie.

We then decided to check out a couple of scrapbook stores before heading back to Nick's for party prep. Nick having the time of his life.

    Everyone mingling outside again

Shortly thereafter I called it a night and went to bed knowing we had a long day on the road the next day. Not sure what time the party ended cuz I fell right to sleep I was so exhusted. I'd like to thank Nick for the warm hospitality. You certainly know how to throw a kick ass party. Looking forward to your next one. I'd also like to thank the rest of the Omaha boys for being such great friends. Means alot that whenever we come to town you guys make a HUGE effort and come over and hang out with us. You're the bestest!

    Day Three, Saturday Aug 16th
Omaha, NE to Rock Springs, WY
    752 miles

The next morning we were up and out the door. Thankfully Nick had room in his car for some of our stuff so we could hear the speakers under the back seat in Big Olds.

The previous day Big Olds had a tough time getting up Nick's driveway so he decided to use some scrap pieces of wood so Big Olds would have less of a chance of scraping. I LOVE Big Olds new stance but it does take alittle more effort, and thinking, when driving.:D
    [IMG]

    On the road heading west!

Megan still trying to figure out how to get her satalite system to work with my new stereo
    [IMG]

    Cool little trailer we saw.

I don't know if it's Megan's or Nick's road game but the three of us spent the day looking at license plates.....

....and taking pictures of each other

We stopped for fuel and made sandwiches for a picnic. Most of the time we like to bring lunch meat, bread and stuff and stop for a homemade lunch instead of expensive fast food stuff
    [IMG]

Things were going so well weatherwise till this. Oh crap, this doesn't look good I said. Megan goes, "It'll just blow over us". I wasn't thinking so. The next exit we pulled off to put up the top, rain-X the windshield and generally batten down the hatches so to speak.

You can clearly see where I rain-x'd around this big ol bug that I didn't wipe off
    [IMG]

I should have grabbed some rags from the trunk when I got out the rain-x. We both used our clothes to try to keep the interior dry.

Megan wrapped the stereo in a bag but alas it was too late. Water had already gotten to it and it never worked again the whole trip. :( Not sure what I'm more pissed about, the money spent on the stereo OR the amount of time loss in installing it.

We're going to take a minute for a commerical announcement. :D
In the past Megan has put her gummy bears candy on the floor of Big Olds underneath her seat to melt together cuz that's how she likes to eat them. This process use to just take a few miles cuz Big Olds had bare metal floors till this past winter. Well now that there is carpet with insulation from Lobucrod http://www.lobucrod.com/ her gummy bears took DAYS to melt and really I think they melted after we got to the Salt and that was because of the sun and not heat from Big Olds.

Megan pointing out the fact that they aren't melted yet
    [IMG]

Lucky for us there was contruction in the area of the Wyoming sign which made it.....

...real easy to pull over to the shoulder without worrying about being hit.

You guys know how I love state signs.....but I think I need a taller tripod
    [IMG]

At this point Nick decides to turn on his heat....what a wuzz:D
To his defense it was freezing cold and at the next gas stop I put on long jeans and my Chucks with socks.:D
    [IMG]

LONG day of driving. We pushed it today knowing that the longer we drove today the earlier we would get to the Salt tomorrow.

Made it to Rock Springs to find just about the whole town under contruction. Found a place to sleep and a place to eat then called it a night. We were all beat.

    Day Four, Sunday Aug 17th
Rock Springs, WY to Wendover, UT
    301 miles

The next morning was brisk but clear and dry. We got up extra early wanting to be on the Salt by noon to check out tech inspection. I really like staying at places with the door facing the parking spots when I'm traveling with Big Olds.

Lots and lots of windmills in the area

We stopped to check out some buffalo
    [IMG]

and this dude was extremely friendly and outgoing. :D
    [IMG]

At this point this truck was the only hot rod looking thing we saw heading west the last three days
    [IMG]

Once west of Salt Lake City we stop for fuel for the last time before reaching Wendover. I gassed up Big Olds then went inside to use the restroom. When I walked back outside there was a group around Big Olds and a couple of other hot rods at pumps.

I took a few steps toward Big Olds and this dude that I did not recognize starts walking quickly toward me and engulfs me in this HUGH bear hug while his wife is snapping photos. While still hugging me he proceeds to tell me he is the brother of the guy that owns the chopped grey primer '47 Olds convertible that I've seen before. So of course this gets me excited because I've seen the car a couple of times, first time was in June of 2002 at Speedy Bills Museum during the kick off party for Power Tour but was never able to catch up with the owner.

One time, just this past GG DesMoines IA event a guy came up to me on a Harley while I was driving Big Olds on the main drag outside the fairgrounds and introduced himself to me as Randy, the owner of the grey '47 Olds covert. We made chit chat while sitting at the light and he said he'd catch up with me inside the fairgrounds. Never happened, and I was bummed that we didn't get a chance to talk Oldsmobiles.

Now at the gas station, Randy's brother Ryan is telling me how he wants to hook me and his brother up and is writing Randy's name and number down AND his own number and wanting me to call Randy and keep in touch with him as well. Anyway, I'm sharing too much information and at this rate the adventure story will take me weeks to write.

Here's me and Ryan, my future brother in law.;):D
    [IMG]

This HAMB guy was running with them, from CO but I've forgotten his name.

    Almost there....

We arrived in Wendover and decided to check in real quick and throw our stuff in our room and hook up with Bill AKA: BrokenSpoke who flew into SLC and arrived in Wendover at the same time as us. I then called Rick AKA: RdachsDog, who hauled my go-cart and Megan mini-bike to the Flats for us. He was at the KOA campground so we all ran over there to help unload the go-cart from the trailer and throw it in his pickup for the short ride to the Salt.

I'd llike to take this opportunity to thank Rick for all the effort he went thru to make sure Megan and I both had our "toys" there to cruise around on. My go-cart was a blast to drive out on the Salt. A huge difference from riding in the grass, fields and gravel at Scott's place here in Michigan. Thanks bud for making this event extra special for me. I truely apprecaite it.

At this point the Bend in the Road wasn't too crowded yet

When we reached almost the end of the asphalt........

........I parked Big Olds and was planning on hopping in Malcolm's Galaxie but just then CharlieChops pulled up in his very cool little track nose roadster so I hopped in there for an AWESOME ride out to about the 5 mile mark.

Thanks for the ride Charlie. It was fun ride and a pleasure seeing and hanging out with you.

We unloaded the go-cart and mini-bike from Rick's truck and I rode the go-cart over to Hooley's pit to say "hi". Got the chance to meet Beck (from the RRT) for the first time. Wonderful finally meeting you bud!
Beck and Hooley.....I think these two could easily pass for brothers
    [IMG]

The guys had already taken the car thru tech and were just getting ready to fire it for the first time
    [IMG]

It was wonderful seeing all the boys from Hooleys team. Congrats to all involved for upping your own record.

Headed back over to the 5 mile spectator area. BenD, Nick79, Maggi, the Suedes, and a bunch of other HAMB folks all had their tents and stuff set up in this area.
    Malcolm's and Nick79's ride

Ran into Boones and KustomBuick there as well. GREAT seeing you again Ken. I'm so glad we were able to help each other out regarding the rooms and it was great meeting KustomBuick for the first time. Your car is bitchen.

At this point we decided to head over to the tech inspection area and check out whats going on there. Megan and Bill rode with Nick in the Galaxie and I rode the go-cart.

We ran into BobK there. ALWAYS a pleasure seeing you sweetie.

Also ran into Brett, AKA: GreenMtnBoy. AWESOME finally meeting you sweetie. I had a blast hanging with you and your Dad.

A wristband allows you to walk anywhere, inlcuding right up to the start line. Not sure how necessary it is as no one has ever said anything to me when I haven't wore one.

I could kick myself for not remembering this HAMB guys name as I had a real nice conversation with him. Sorry bud
    [IMG]

Brett went to go put his stash away and came back with presents for me and Megan. Very cool bottle openers from Atlanta. Thanks sweetie, mine will come in handy for sure.

We mingled around abit and I was able to meet Jon, the owner of the site. It was a real pleasure. Next time perhaps we'll have more time for a longer, get to know you chat.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Skajaquada and his lovely wife for the tiki glasses. I absolutely LOVE them and can't wait to use them at the next party. Speaking of which you two really need to make it out here to Detroit one of these days to hang out. The Detroit Autorama in March is a blast. I've got plenty of room here at the house so think about it.

Me & Ridgerunner. It was wonderful meeting you and chatting. Thank you so much for introducing yourself. One of these days soon I'd like to make it to a few events in the northeast. Hopefully our paths will cross again then.

AWESOME seeing and hanging out with the Strange Days crew and catching up with what's new. Look for this team next year as they are building a streamliner right now.

We then decided to head back to the rooms, shower and meet for dinner. You know you're good pals when you can share the bathroom getting ready
    [IMG]

We met the Strange Days crew at the Nugget. Steve had a present for me. He painted up a Flintstone skull that Daryl Mayhab had given me a couple of years ago. I had forgotten about it. Steve even made a very cool stand for it. Thanks sweetie! I LOVE it!

We walked across the street for dinner. I'm bummed we missed the Friday night buffet which was my favorite.

Then walked back to the Nugget to check out the cars and mingle

    Day 5, Monday Aug 18th
First full day on the Salt

We all decide to get up on the earlier side so we can catch the drivers meeting at 9am. We grab a quick breakie and head out. Me, Megan, Bill all hop in Nick's Galaxie for the quick ride to the start line.

Not sure what these were but on Sunday and this morning they had the roadways tied up moving them.

The line was longer this morning to get on the Salt but it moved fast and there were lots of cool cars to view
    [IMG]

The drivers meeting lasts about one hour in total and is not only important but informative as well.

    Some of Hooleys crew
    [IMG]

    Boones and KustomBuick
    [IMG]

After the drivers meeting everyone got to drive down the course as fast as they dared.

Megan had been keeping in touch with the Old Crow team via text and found out they were in impound so we headed over to congradulate them.

We then decide to head back to the camopy area where alot of HAMB folks were hanging out to have a quick sandwich for lunch. Megan and Nick in the Galaxie, I rode my go-cart
    [IMG]

Once back in that area caught up with the Suedes adjusting the carbs on Dakota's roadster. It was nice seeing them all again and hanging out.

Tony from Streamline was on the Salt with their trucks and trailers and ask me to take a few shots of Eyeball's AWESOME new roadster by their trailer.

We finally sat down unnder the canopy and spotted Hooley coming back from a run
    [IMG]

We had lots of company under the shade. I'd like to thank the folks that brought the canopies for sharing. Very much appreciated

We then decide to head back to our room, shower and head to this "gourmet" buger place in town we had heard about. Before we left on this trip everyone talked about how the cops were going to be out in full force and to watch your speed not only on the Salt but the acess road and in town as well. I only saw police cars this one time and it was on the access road

Was having some issues the last couple of days with nuts and bolts loosening up and falling off the top bows assembly. Had alittle help putting some back in before we left for dinner.

The burger place was packed but unfortunantly the burgers were just frozen pattys from a box and not what we expected....PLUS they were charging us $4 a burger more then normal and we ate them at folding tables with greasy plastic tablecoverings that they didn't even wipe off after the people before us left and we sat down. Service was VERY slow, understanable under the cirumstances but still. Haven't really figured out why they didn't hire a few more cooks and waitstaff to get folks in and out faster which leads to more profit. Bummer for them cuz I'll never eat there again and I don't think my posse will either. Did run into Brett, his Dad and the other guys from VT

SO looking forward to seeing the est of this post. Thank you for all the work that goes into these.

I was so happy that you made it back to MI after the repairs at Joplin. I'm thinking that it was the grit from the cut off wheel an AZ that did in the bearing that we changed out.

We had hung the HAMB Meet & Greet banner off of BenD's canopy first thing this morning so hopefully folks saw it so they knew where it was going to be held
    [IMG]

I was SHOCKED at the number of HAMB folks that attended the M&G and would just like to thank those that attended. Networking is so important and a meet & greet can be so beneficial in accomplishing the task of introducing yourself to a number of people in a short period of time, PLUS they're so much fun!:D

There were name tags and stickers for all. Sorry about running out toward the end. I was not expecting such a huge crowd. Next time I'll be prepared.

Once the Meet & Greet broke up Megan decided to gas up her mini-bike and take it for a spin.

I wanted to continue to visit with pals in the pits. Stopped for a brief visit in Gene's pits
    [IMG]

Someone in his pit has neat salt transportation
    [IMG]

I then stopped at the Maine Barons for awhile

I have forgotten what his name is but he is the oldest living member of the 200 MPH Club at what I'm remembering is 96 years old.

Hooked back up with Megan and Nick and decided to head out to the start line again. I stopped and introduced myself to Uno's brother Jesus, very nice guy
    [IMG]

.....and chatted with Brian Bass and posse. Nice seeing ya again sweetie
    [IMG]

We then decided it was time to head over to the Hop Up party but first we needed to hook up with Rick so we could throw the go-cart and mini-bike in his truck since this was our last day on the salt. Got everything loaded up then posed for a few shots
