Did you (or will you) use an English wheel to shape the side-to-side curve in the trunk lid skin?

I put a straightedge across the middle of the original trunk lid on my (different but similar) '32 three-window and eyeballed a one-inch peak in the center.

Not got that far yet,but yes i will.Theres quite a crown in the skin.I'm cheating and using a Daimler roof skin, but it still needs more shape. It's not gonna be easy i'm picking...

Looks great! Great idea for the bead without a roller. How many hours do you think you have in it so far?
Keep it up and lets see some more.

The air hammer/chisel has a pressure knob so i'm able to slow the speed.A air chisel going flat out would just make a mess.Could also use an aircraft rivet gun.

Actually i'm not really sure, maybe about 20?!The first one's always the hardest. If someone came to me and asked me to make one..well they'd be better off just buying one tbh.

  22. Well thought out and excecuted. I'd love to get a better look at the backing plate for that "bead beater" you made. Cool thread.

The backing former is easy.I wanted a depth of 5mm,so i grabbed some 5x25 strap and bolted it up to the top former.I held a big arse dollie underneath as i hammered to control the depth.

i'd love to know more about the hammer used, not the air tool but the head itself... home made piece or is it a planisher head of some sort?

  29. Very well done. I teach a fab class at my local community college and as long as you don't mind I think I might show the students that airhammer trick. I've done some similar stuff but never thought of using it to form beads (I built a bead roller, but if I need to do a different shape I might just run with your Idea). Thanx for posting the pictures and keep posting, I'd love to see how it shapes up.

It's just a home made piece.Found a spacer in my junk,an inch wide and about 1/2 high.Used a punch piece from an air tool set and just welded it on the end.Built up a dome with weld and ground it to the desired shape.I've searched for planishing heads for an air hammer, with no luck. Can you point me in the right direction?Cheers
