i thought it would be good to have a list of the books (not magazines) that we all look through. ill start with my few... "Barris Kustom Techniques of the 50's vol. 1, 2, 3 & 4" "Barris Kustoms of the 1950s" "The American Custom Car" "Hot Rod & Custom Chronicle" "Hot Rods & Custom Cars" "Hot Rod Kings" "Lead Sleads" "Classic Customs and Lead Sleds" "Cool Cars, High Art" "Billy F Gibbons Rock + Roll Gearhead" "Low 'n Slow" "Lowriders" "Cars of teh Fabulous '50s" "Indian Larry Chopper Shaman" "Hot Rod Pin-ups" "The Bikeriders" on its way... "The Legendary Custom Cars and Hot Rods of Gene Winfield" "The Electroline Diaries: A journey with the Burbank Choppers car club" and pre-ordered... "Kustomland: The Custom Car Photography of James Potter, 1955-1959"
At the top of the stack are "Cool Cars Square Roll Bars" by Arnie and Bernie Shuman and "The Birth of Hot Rodding" by Robert Genat and Don Cox. I never get sick of those books, they're awsome.
The Don Montgomery books are good, though I'm still trying to track them all down. I just got "Hot Rod" by Peter Vincent, has lots of amazing photography.
According to my wife, I own "all of them". Apparently I own every gun book ever published from 1920 until 1960 too. Johnnie.
Does "Hot Rod Hustlers" (with a picture of a 3/4 naked wench on the front and a 50's jalopy in the background) count as a car book?
Another vote for the Don Montgomery books; really, really outstanding. Dean Batchelor's last book was about hot rods, and is excellent. Title is "The American Hot Rod" in hardcover, or "Dry Lakes and Drag Strips: The American Hot Rod" in paperback.
Every copy of Rodders Journals....(including 2 sets of "A" cover & "B" cover) Junkyard Jewels Nostalgia Hot Rods (O'Toole) 50 Years of Hot Rod Hot Rod Chronicles Hot Rods (Kevin Elliot) All Mad Fabricators DVD's...

thanks for all the replies!!! i am going shopping for some more books now. later ill edit my first post with hopefully everyones book kinda like a reference that we can add to.
Most of the Ford & Mercury(39-54) factory Chassis Parts books and Body Parts books from 28-72, many shop manuals same eras. Various Chevy & Plymouth manuals. Stacks of periodical magazines, one-shots, and various special issues. Hot Rod, 1948-58. Like that.
Do any of the rest of you ever look at all the boxes of old magazines, stacks of books and reference material and think, "Damn, I could own a couple more cars for what I spent on all those dead trees!" lol
Don Montgomery's books are tops. Also, I sure like "The Birth of Hotrodding" and the cool Petersen Publishing How-To books from the early '60s.
i bought my pops a really nice book on Ed Roth for Christmas. lots of pictures and stories and first hand accounts of his projects and art in general. the Billy F Gibbons book is great too.
