about this time every year, I plug the name and info of the most recent AMBR winner into a spreadsheet of all the AMBR winners, and every year I vow to fill in the blanks (I have yet to find a comprehensive list of all the winners). So, for example, I know that Bill Niekamp won in 1950 and Bud Crackbon won in 1952. But I don't know who won in 1951. I'm also missing info about the winners from the following years: 1953-54 1971-77 1980 1982-83 1985 1992 2001-02 Anybody know? Of course, the minute I post this, somebody will reply with a link to the whole list. thanks, dan
Ha, ha... I googled and look where it pointed me too.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=226094&page=3 "Don't have a pic of it,but the AMBR winner for 1951 was Carter Fisher and his V8 60 powered T roadster." <!-- / message --> Rich
"AMBR winner for 1951 was Carter Fisher and his V8 60 powered T roadster." found on a google search-link to HAMB thread HAHA.... doh! too slow....
I googled again... According to "Hot Rods: The History of Hot Rods in 500 Photos" page 80, "Rico Squaglia built his turtledeck T in 1949, winning the America's Most Beautiful Roadster trophy in 1951, the car changed hands and was disassembled in the 60's, before Carter Fisher bought it in pieces and undertook it's restoration"
Didn't they do a review of all of the winners on the promo stuff for their 50th? I seem to remember seeing all of them in a flyer or magazine somewhere....
1951: Rico Squaglia - T Roadster 1953: Dick Williams - '27 T 1971: Lonnie Gilbertson - T Roadster 1972: John Corno - rear engine '30 Model A 1974: Jim Vasser - '23 T Touring 1975: Lonnie Gilbertson (again) - T Roadster 1980: John Corno - '28 Highboy 1982: Jamie Musselman - '33 Roadster 1983: Chuck Lombardo - '32 Roadster 1985: Larry and Judy Murray - '33 Phaeton
I was looking on evil bay for flathead parts and came across a listing for the September 1951 Hot Rod that has the 1951 AMBR winner on the cover. Here is a link to it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HOT-...009QQitemZ190194044879QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
Dennis has owned the car since the late 60's, and it was a rod and custom cover car a few times..he redid it, and after it won, he packed it with luggage and drove it to Indy if I remember correctly....he also beats the piss out of it regularly...Ken from the Rolling Bones rode in it, and he said it pulls HARD...its got a blown stroker small block chevy in it...I'm pretty sure Boyd didn't build it as well..may be wrong on that..I do know Boyds crew are the ones that detailed the hell out of it for the show though
Check out the book,"Boyd Coddington"s,How to build-HOT ROD ENGINES & DRIVELINES" BY Timothy Remus. The Varni roadster is on the cover, and a picture on page 11 shows Dennis and Boyd "discussing"the all aluminum Hawk small block, page 153 also shows the crew at "Hot Rods by Boyd" installing the engine, complete with all the one off engine accessories they manufactured, and they appear to have built the car,if you read through that book.I'm not certain, someone please correct me if i'm wrong. I know Boyd's current shop is not appreciated here, nor am i a fan(please, that's mostly TV Drama crap),but if the old shop,"Hot Rods by Boyd" did build that car, then they deserve a compliment, because it's a beautifully constructed car, that has had the wheels driven off it,as any great hot rod should. No it's not a "traditional rod",but it is a beautiful example of workmanship for it's time.
I love the line on that cover,"Nitro the poor mans supercharger"LOL Parts and Nitro must have been cheaper back then.
There is a list of all the winners from 1950 to 1998, in the back of Andy Southards book, The Oakland Roadster Show.
Wish I woulda taken a pict of it at Indy 93. Grille and windshield covered in bug. Denis and a group of roadsters drove from Cali to Indy. Impressed me. Never seen such a big show winner actually on the road.
Okay, so who really won in 2001? Still missing 1954, 1973, 1976 and 1977. Does anybody have that Andy Southard book and can look them up for me? and just to confirm, there were only two ties: One in 1955 and one in 1968, correct? thanks, dan
