Wanted to build some Zoomies for my modified 27 Nash. Here is what I did. #1: Flanges, I made my own exhaust flanges using the gaskets as a template, out of 1/4" steel. I simply used a plasma cutter and the drilled the bolt holes on the drill press. I could have bought some flanges, but whats the fun in that. #2: I bolted the flanges onto the motor (ford 302) without the gaskets. #3: Determine the lenght of your pipes, I went for 18" long. #4: I cut the pipes at a slight angle to allow them to point down and back. #5: Since the exhaust ports are ovan and pretty small, about 1 1/4" wide X 1 3/4" high, I had to "massage" the ends with a rubber mallet, on the flange side to get maximum flow and to maintain bolt clearance. #6: Tack the pipes to the flanges, I used my eye the make sure they look right. Measuring sometimes gets in my way. #8: Unbolt the Zoomies and finish weld them on the bench. I have not fired the engine yet so, I might make some baffles and shorten the pipes. This a very simple but effective process. Oh I spent about $20 and 2 hours. I hope you like View attachment 243045 View attachment 243046 View attachment 243047 View attachment 243048 View attachment 243049
wow those are going to sound mean, nice work, you going to run baffles? hows the roadster coming along anyways?
i would think about running them just to get alittle back pressure, ive been thinking about doing that with mine too. i am anxious to see the finished product, its going to be killer
i would think it would depend on the diameter of the tubing, it would be a good idea to have some back pressure expecially since you plan on driving it on the street, you dont want to bend a valve
I bet you could use washers. Just weld them inside about 1 1/2'' from the end,so you can't see them. Then if you don't like the sound, you just drill the inner hole out bigger. I've also known guys to take the baffles out of VW pee-shooters,and weld them in.
I'll make my own baffles out of 1 1/4" round tubing, kind of like this. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43062&highlight=lake+style
