I sandblasted my wheels and I'm looking to put some color on them. What is the proper ratio of Rustoleum - acetone - hardner? I plan to use Vlaspar hardner unless someone knows of a better product. My primer is the Rustoleum 7780-730 Clean Metal Primer (White stuff). I thought I saw a 4-4-1 ratio but wanted to double check. Thanks for any help! -Karl
I shot my frame and wheels with rustoleum over two coats of PPG DP-90, When I mixed it, I eye balled it. I added like 25% Acetone. Use a scrap piece of sheetmetal and experiment with the mixture until it's right with no orange peel.
If you must use that Rustoleum product, stay with manufacturer's guidelines. Forget hardner. It's not an epoxy paint. You'd just be wasting money and would possibly compromise the integrity of the finish. Here is the TDS. http://www.rustoleumibg.com/images/tds/CBG_TDS Stops Rust Primers 209.pdf It is soluable with mineral spirits. Other products they list having this make-up can be reduced 10% with mineral spirits. I would stay close to that. There are much better products out there. PPG DP-XX for one... Imagine how you will feel in a few years when the rustoleum os coming off.
I got one of those big tool boxes from homie depot for the back of my truck. Didn't like the green color so I sprayed it with rustoleum. It's crap.it's not real hard , took forever to harden and the worst part is it faded really bad. Must not have any UV protection.
If you don't like the Rustoleum, another cheap alternative - I used Valpar's oil based enamel on some metal patio furniture for my Mom last year. It took FOREVER to dry but still looks good after 1 year in the weather. I've been using flat black epoxy primer alot lately. I got it from Summit (supposedly re-branded Kirker product) but it's less than $100 for the paint and catalyst which makes 2 gallons sprayable. Goes direct to metal and gets pretty hard. Plus it's cheap.
Hey, By all means, DO use the hardner with the Rustoleum. This material is the old synthetic enamel, and unlike today's urethane, dries from the outside in unless a hardner is used. The hardner improves gloss, and helps protect the marginal binder and pigments used in this material against sunlight and oxygen. Most synthetic enamels are best reduced by about 25%, but you may have to adjust your reduction based upon the gun you use, pressure from sprayed surface and shop temp. If you over reduce a synthetic enamel it will soon fail as your spraying more solvent than paint. F.W.I.W. Valspar is the parent company of HOK (House of Color) and is a very large paint company. http://motors.shop.ebay.com/wbmesq/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg= ppg omni acrylic enamel $30 gallon and up. real auto paint, not great auto paint
Pimpin Paint, What hardener would you use that I can buy locally? I have some Rustoleum for an outdoor project.
Hey John, Rustolum markets a hardner with this line, but I think that Valspar also markets a hardner that will fly with synthetic enamel. The 'New Reich' aka SCAQMD South Coast Air Quality Management District, and EPA are changing the regs. on paint material jus' about weekly, so be sure to check jus' what you're buying! Yes, they do contain an acid. Let me be really clear here, there is nothing in automotive refinishing material that you'd expect to find on the shelf of a health food store! None of the chemicals contained in paint material are organic to the human body. ALWAYS read and be sure that you completely understand what is in the material you are using, how to protect yourself during use, and what can happen if you don't! why why why use rust o tractor ???? you are only painting wheels ...you have already spent the time to get them clean just paint them with good paint and be done !!!
as far as shooting rust o tractor pull off the lid light it then take 12 ga and shoot it ....makes a nice light show
I painted some Rustoleum without hardener... something like two months ago. A couple of runs in it are still soft inside. Use something in it even if you brush the shit on. To dress up wheels on a driver, it should be fine, I used it on some wheels years ago and it even lasted through the winter in the salt belt.
I shot mine in Rustoleum but next time I am going to use tractor paint, more colors and tough as hell!
I have used R/O many times with good results, I always use Acetone as the solvent drys slow but stay on.
i cant remember who said it but id use omni (ppg) or maybe nason (dupont)... but would def. throw some enamal hardner in the rust-o if spraying it, and i usualy judge how much reducer by how it flows out of the gun, a lot of times you can get a kit of omni or something simalur for real cheep, plus i dont know about the uv protection rusto has so inturn it my chalk out on you, and i must say there are some companys out there now that are makeing half decent paint for cheep cuz in the past few years paint has gone through the roof!!!!
my car is rustolium made the color my self 1 gallon white pint of dark blue added blue to white till i got baby blue...only thing it scratches easy as shit but i was going for the fotina look anyway so..
I decided to experiment by test shooting a mix on my nephews Tonka truck (which I blasted and primed with my wheels). I mixed it 4:1:1 shot it in the shade and then moved into to the sunlight to cure. It dried fast and the finish has been shiny and hard. I'll throw some rocks at the bed later and see how the paint chips.. -K
Rustoleum Is a general consumer product so it has no lead in it at all, lead is the magic anti sun fade ingredient, SShhh dont tell the greenies, If they dont use lead they use something about as toxic so you cant buy it at local hardware. If you go with joe consumer paint you wont get good life out of it.
I have tried Hammerite, on two sets of wheels. My last set was on my 89 4x4 Suburban hauler, I found some 15x8" rally wheels and blasted, primed and shot three coats of basic silver, it's been two years in the NW weather and it has been holding up just fine....
