Thats perfect!! I was afraid that it would end up with round openings, which wouldn't look right at all on that car.

 

Palle- Awesome that you got the caps, I think they after a little elbow grease and some polishing they will look awesome on your Merc. Don't forget to take a pic!

All this discussion regarding the wheel-well openings wasn't planned just so we wouldn't notice your intention of CHANGING THE SPOTLIGHTS?

Ha ha ha

There have always been Appletons S-552's on the car ever since it was first finished in white primer in 1950. Bob Drake changed those to smaller units when he put the car back on the road in 1972.

 

I didn't know Bob Drake had changed the spots... Interesting.. Rik you know your stuff buddy !

 

I should'a said changing the spotlights BACK.. Heh, heh!

well I only took one photo from the first try we did. we made several different new corners to try find the right shape.
I am surprised to see how the small changes gives a totally new look.

okay heres the promised photo..its a mockup, and the small tin pieces are just sprayed with red primer. not even welded in yet!

That's all it needed. In reality, you just completed the wheel openings that were started many years ago! I was scared they would be round on top. This looks great! Onward with the restoration.

Wow...I had mixed feelings about the wheel openings as they have become part of the identity of this car....but it deserves better then that. Rik's photoshop proved how much a minor tweak could do the whole appearance of this car, and since the modification was planned to be from the beginning, and it is approved by Jack, I feel better about it in a way The mockup looks great to Palle!!

 

So cool that you're involving Mr. Stewart in the resto.
I would be so f'n happy if someone was making such a huge effort to put a car I built 60+ years ago, back to the way it was. And I would be even more stoked if they were looking to fix a visual flaw that I had always regretted not finishing back when it was mine, and more so that they included asking me if that was how I would have liked it, had I gotten around to it.

Sure hope to see it in person some day.

Thanks guys..it really gives the car a new look. we had both sides welded in today, and I am very happy I did it!

 

Kinda reminds me of the original version of LeRoy Goularts 51 Ford. I think they were from a 52-54 Ford front fender wheel opening.

Here is the Goulart 51. the ones on Jacks where all handmade, they where trying to capture the new look from the 49 ford ..picture from Rikster.
