Anyone ever tried or heard about stringing a piece of piano wire on exhaust tips? I had an old timer tell me that it will make exhausts louder than hell.He said that they used to do it in the old days and it makes such a high pitch sound that it can shatter glass. He told me that they would drill a small hole in the top and a small hole in the bottom about an inch from the end of the tip and string a piece of wire tight though the holes accross the middle of pipe .Any truth to this ?
"I'm not going to fall for the banana in the tail pipe!" I have never heard of anything like that. In theory "it makes such a high pitch sound that it can shatter glass". ?? I can't see that. Out of curiousity what would the point be?
Close ... heavy steel guitar string 3 or 4 feet long from the last bend in the tailpipe to the front of the tip is what it takes. You build a windup device in the front of the tip so you can tune it. Works best on Chevy & Plymouth sixes with split manifold & steelpacks around 17" long.
Not sure there is a point to it.He just mentioned it to me a while back ,and out of respect of his knowlage of hotrods , i gave him the benifit of the doubt and didnt question him.The man is a legend in these parts .I thought maybe someone else may have heard of it ...
Finally someone has heard of it ,and now that you mentioned it ,he told me Chevy Inlines responded well to it.I dont remember him describing it that way ,but i was half lit and it was 5 or 6 years ago when he told me this story ,so i could be mistaken on that part...

Old Hotrod trick. I've heard of it too. My Dad and his buddies did it. Now, get out to that garage and hook one up and tell us how it sounds. I love disturbing the peace. Thats why I like Zoomies so much. I crack up when I hear guys say their "only" for drag cars. Bah! Loud pipes save lives.B
lol, they took off, almost sideswiped a car then barreled straight thru a stop sign. on tv no less. lol. ignorant jackasses.
I agree (with the stupid driving), yea my dad also told me about the piano wire. I would sure like to know if it works too.
I had an old timer tall me he used to do that also. He had a '49 ford after he came back from Korea and he said all the kids did that to their cars. I have never tried it but seems it would sound like a VW in a way. Just my .02
What a riot that news film is. Ya feel me??? I laughed my ass off!! Out of control man. Whew!!~Sololobo~
I hate that I did not get to post the whistle tip video 1st. My brother sent that to me about 2 years ago and it still has to be one of the most retarded/funny things I have ever seen.
It's true: Stereotypes DO exist because a bunch of old white guys sat around in a smoke-filled room drinking bourbon, smoking Cuban cigars and said "Hey, let's say this about (fill in the blank)." Woo-woooooo! -Brad
DAMN that was ghetto! I haven't laughed that hard in forever! "WOOO-WOOO!" The driving was awesome too...
I've always liked to use an exhaust system to make a car a little more quiet...but maybe I'm just silly. -Jeff
In 1961 a guy in my high school had a 54 ford tudor hardtop with 303 Olds motor. The story about the broken windows along the parking lot side of school was done by his doing the wire thing, so he and a couple of others said anyway. I did not see it, just heard of it. Can't say it was true. It was one bad 54, I do know that.
