Anyone here know the EXACT location for the VIN Number stamped in a 1946 GMC 3/4 ton Truck ? Its not on the Plate under the Right side of the Hood on the Cowl like a Chevy. Original Engine is Gone. Only a serial # on Cowl tag. Is it stamped in the Frame somwhere ? We need some help locating this # so it can get Registered.
The two that I worked on had a VIN stamped on the frame rail, drivers side top in the front near where the bumper bolts on. Pat
http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/VIN.htm Check this site out. Mine is a little newer but it pointed me in the right direction.
I checked it out but its for Chevrolet Trucks. GMC's are different, I have another friend that has Chevys & it a whole different deal.
Sorry, wish I could have helped, good luck. It was a nightmare to get mine changed and I still have the original motor. The truck was already in PA, and PA wanted CA to change it. CA flat out told me, "sorry, no. That's just the way we do it". Glad I pushed the issue and got it done right, especially after reading Swifster's thread yesterday!
My '46 GMC has a plate on the side of the cowl section, under the rear portion of the right side hood. Send me your email and I'll send you back a picture. [email protected]
On outside side of RIGHT front frame rail just behind shackle/bumper mount rivet area. (at least that's where the '40 is and it's the same frame.)
I have a 1948 heavy duty GMC truck (10 ton) and the serial number / body tag is on the inside of the firewall below the dash. There is also a serial number just above and ahead of the front axle on the outside of the passenger side framerail IIRC. The truck is stored at my dad's place about 150 miles away so I cant go check easily, but it also may be in a different spot on a lighter duty truck, the big ones carried over the older pre-war body style for a while.
DrJ & J T have the right answer - right side frame rail on the vertical outside portion of the C-Channel right behind the bumper bracket. GMC stamped all frames here up to and including 1948.
